FC Goa Coach Manolo Marquez's Calm Reaction to Nemil's Spectacular Goal
When Muhammed Nemil unleashed a stunning long-range strike against Mumbai City FC, spectators and fans across the stadium were left in awe at the sheer quality of the goal. However, FC Goa's head coach, Manolo Marquez, displayed a markedly different reaction. Instead of joining the celebrations, he simply turned around and returned to his seat in the dugout, showing no visible emotion as if it were just another routine moment in the game.
Marquez's Insight on Nemil's Breakthrough Moment
Speaking to reporters after the crucial 2-0 victory over Mumbai City FC on Saturday, Marquez explained his composed demeanor. He revealed that while he was undoubtedly happy for Nemil, who scored his first-ever goal in the Indian Super League (ISL), the strike did not come as a surprise to him. "He scored a goal which he normally scores in training sessions but has never done it in a competitive game," Marquez stated. "He scored a similar goal in a friendly against Mumbai City in Navi Mumbai when Des Buckingham was coach. He recreated that goal today. I am very happy for Nemil because for a player who plays in that position, it's important to score."
A Collective Triumph: Marquez Hails Team Performance
Marquez was quick to shift the focus from individual brilliance to the team's overall effort. He described the match as "a good team effort" and emphasized that this was arguably FC Goa's best performance of the entire season. "I think this was our best game of the season. We had a strong opposition in front of us, unbeaten, and faced with a situation where a loss would have meant season over for us. We are still here fighting. Hats off to the boys," he praised.
The coach further elaborated on the squad's resilience and achievements, noting, "The season has been long, and we have already qualified for Asian competition by winning the Super Cup. I am saying it again, I am very satisfied with the squad that we have this season. They performed at a very high level today."
ISL Standings and Upcoming Challenges
The significant win propelled FC Goa to 16 points, securing third place on the ISL table. They now trail league leaders Mumbai City FC by just two points, with Mumbai holding 18 points. Meanwhile, favorites Mohun Bagan Super Giant occupy the second spot with 17 points and have an opportunity to extend their lead at the top if they secure a victory against NorthEast United FC.
Marquez highlighted the favorable outcomes from other matches in the league round, stating, "Jamshedpur lost, Mumbai lost, while East Bengal and Bengaluru drew, so this has been a great round for us." However, he acknowledged the tough road ahead, particularly with an upcoming fixture against NorthEast United. "Now we travel to Guwahati to face NorthEast, a team that has been sort of a black spot for us because we have not defeated them. This is a very difficult competition; it's not easy to keep winning. Let's see if we can defeat NorthEast."
FC Goa's schedule includes a match against NorthEast United on April 24, followed by a clash with Jamshedpur FC on May 1. The team will then return home for a high-profile encounter against Mohun Bagan Super Giant on April 9, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to their ISL campaign.
