Cristiano Ronaldo Excluded from Portugal Squad for Pre-World Cup Friendlies
In a significant development for Portuguese football, legendary striker Cristiano Ronaldo has been omitted from Portugal's national squad for the upcoming pre-FIFA World Cup friendly matches. Head coach Roberto Martinez announced the squad on Friday, confirming Ronaldo's absence due to a muscle injury.
Injury Details and Recovery Timeline
The injury occurred while Ronaldo was playing for his club Al-Nassr, identified as a hamstring issue following their game against Al Fayha. The 39-year-old forward has been undergoing rehabilitation, initially in Saudi Arabia before continuing his recovery in Madrid. Reports indicate his return has taken slightly longer than anticipated, leading to his exclusion from the international fixtures.
Martinez addressed concerns about Ronaldo's fitness ahead of the World Cup, stating emphatically: "The World Cup is not at risk! He is not at risk. It is a minor muscle injury, and we think he can return in a week or two. Everything Cristiano has done physically during the season shows that he is in great shape."
Portugal's Upcoming Fixtures and Squad Preparations
Portugal are scheduled to face the Mexico national football team on March 28 at the Azteca Banorte Stadium, followed by a match against the United States men's national soccer team on March 31 at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The squad will begin preparations in Mexico next week, assembling on Monday before starting training on Tuesday.
In another notable selection decision, Bernardo Silva was also left out of the squad. Martinez confirmed this was a "technical decision" based on medical inputs from his club.
Ronaldo's Current Form and World Cup Context
Despite the injury setback, Ronaldo has been in exceptional form this season. He currently leads the league's Golden Boot race with 21 goals, while Al-Nassr sit atop the table with 67 points from 26 matches. The upcoming World Cup will mark Ronaldo's sixth appearance at the tournament, adding to his glittering international career that includes leading Portugal to the UEFA Euro 2016 title and triumphs in the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
Portugal have been placed in Group K for the World Cup alongside Uzbekistan, Colombia and a yet-to-be-decided qualifier. Their campaign is set to begin on June 17 in Houston.
