The Hundred Auction Seals Major Deals for Mustafizur Rahman and Pakistan Stars

The auction for The Hundred cricket tournament on Thursday generated significant buzz, with Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman and two Pakistan players securing contracts, highlighting key talking points in the cricketing world.

Mustafizur Rahman's New Chapter with Birmingham Phoenix

Bangladesh left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman was acquired by Birmingham Phoenix for GBP 100,000, approximately Rs 1.23 crore. This move marks a fresh start for Mustafizur after a tumultuous period that began with his sudden release from Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. The release was directed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, sparking widespread debate in Bangladesh and leading to diplomatic and cricketing repercussions, including Bangladesh's withdrawal from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, making it one of the season's most discussed controversies.

Pakistan Players Make History in The Hundred

In a notable development, two Pakistan players were picked in the auction. Mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed was bought by Sunrisers Leeds for GBP 190,000, around Rs 2.34 crore, following a competitive bidding war with Trent Rockets. Abrar's signing is particularly significant as Sunrisers Leeds are owned by the Chennai-based Sun Group, making him the first Pakistan player to join an Indian-owned franchise in The Hundred.

Another Pakistan mystery spinner, Usman Tariq, was selected by Birmingham Phoenix for GBP 140,000, about Rs 1.72 crore. However, Birmingham Phoenix has no direct ties to any IPL franchise, adding an interesting dynamic to the acquisition.

Unsold Stars and Top Bids in the Auction

Despite these successes, several prominent Pakistan players failed to attract bids. Fast bowler Haris Rauf, all-rounder Saim Ayub, and spinner Shadab Khan went unsold, while seasoned pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi had previously withdrawn from the auction. Among other highlights, Sussex all-rounder James Coles secured the top bid of the day, joining London Spirit for GBP 390,000, approximately Rs 4.8 crore.

Upcoming Schedule for The Hundred

The upcoming edition of The Hundred is scheduled to run from July 21 to August 16, promising an exciting season of cricket with these new signings set to make a significant impact.
