Mitchell Starc's Delhi Capitals Debut Delayed by Injury Recovery
Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc has not yet joined the Delhi Capitals training camp for the Indian Premier League, and sources indicate the 36-year-old left-arm fast bowler is expected to miss at least three more matches for the franchise. Starc is currently managing rehabilitation for shoulder and elbow injuries in Australia and is highly unlikely to link up with the squad before April 20.
Upcoming Matches to Proceed Without Star Bowler
Before that date, Delhi Capitals are scheduled to play three crucial fixtures: against Gujarat Titans on April 8, Chennai Super Kings on April 11, and Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 18. The team will have to navigate these contests without the services of their marquee signing, whose absence creates a significant void in their bowling attack.
The DC management remains optimistic about Starc joining the squad at some stage during the season, though precise timelines remain uncertain. In the interim, the Axar Patel-led unit has demonstrated resilience, securing victories in both their opening matches against Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians.
Bowling Unit Steps Up in Starc's Absence
Delhi's versatile bowling department has delivered impressive performances despite Starc's unavailability. Mukesh Kumar has been particularly penetrative with the new ball, while overseas quick Lungi Ngidi and left-arm seamer T Natarajan have maintained accuracy during challenging phases. The spin trio of captain Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Vipraj Nigam has effectively controlled the middle overs, restricting opposition scoring rates.
Starc's eventual addition is anticipated to provide substantial firepower to this already potent attack. The Australian international maintains regular communication with the Delhi Capitals management regarding his recovery progress.
Starc Addresses Injury Speculation on Social Media
Last month, Starc took to social media to clarify the nature of his injury and respond to what he described as "misinformed opinions" circulating in Indian media. "Despite the opinions and views of certain individuals with their platforms in and through the Indian media, I'm currently rehabbing and managing an injury in my shoulder and elbow, the extent of which I didn't know during the Australian summer," Starc wrote in a detailed statement.
He continued, "These individuals have made some strong statements around involvement in the IPL and provided heavily misinformed opinions of players, preached them as facts, and claimed to know my body better than me."
Commitment to Delhi Capitals Remains Strong
The experienced bowler emphasized his dedication to joining the Delhi squad at the earliest opportunity. "With that said, I do acknowledge this injury setback and that the timing is disruptive to the Delhi team, and I apologise for that and to the fans for not being available for the early part of this season," Starc added. "I remain committed to joining DC, am in continual communication with the team, and will continue to do what I can to be available for DC as soon as possible."
Delhi Capitals Look to Maintain Unbeaten Start
Delhi Capitals will next face Gujarat Titans at their home ground on April 8, aiming to extend their unbeaten run in the tournament. Young batter Sameer Rizvi has excelled in pressure situations during two successful chases, and the management now hopes experienced batsmen around him will contribute substantially as the competition intensifies.
DC currently stands among four undefeated teams in IPL 2026, and a victory over Gujarat Titans would propel them to the top position in the points table, strengthening their position early in the season.
