Gautam Gambhir Takes Legal Action Against AI-Generated Deepfakes and Identity Misuse
Indian men's cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has initiated a significant legal battle by filing a lawsuit in the Delhi High Court. The petition seeks comprehensive relief against what he describes as the widespread misuse of his identity through advanced artificial intelligence tools, deepfake technology, and unauthorized commercial exploitation.
Defendants Include Social Media Accounts and Major Platforms
In his detailed petition, Gambhir has named multiple entities as defendants, including:
- Identified social media accounts such as JanKey Frames, Bhupendra Paintola, Legends Revolution, and cricket_memer45
- Major e-commerce platforms Amazon and Flipkart
- Platform intermediaries Meta Platforms Inc., X Corp., and Google LLC/YouTube
- Government bodies including the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology and Department of Telecommunications as proforma parties
The lawsuit targets a total of 16 defendants, with government authorities included specifically to facilitate implementation of any court orders that may be issued.
Seeking Permanent Injunction and Substantial Damages
The former BJP parliamentarian has requested a permanent injunction to restrain all defendants from using his name, image, voice, or persona without explicit consent. Additionally, he has sought an immediate ex-parte ad-interim injunction for the removal of all unauthorized content and to prevent further circulation while the case undergoes judicial consideration.
Gambhir's legal team has also demanded damages amounting to Rs 2.5 crore along with rendition of accounts from the defendants. The petition invokes multiple legal frameworks including the Copyright Act, Trade Marks Act, and Commercial Courts Act, while also citing judicial precedents that recognize personality and publicity rights as enforceable legal protections.
Rise of Fabricated Content Since Late 2025
According to the detailed plea, there has been a significant increase since late 2025 in fabricated digital content created using sophisticated AI tools. These include face-swapping technology and voice cloning techniques that allegedly show Gambhir making statements he never actually made.
The filing specifically mentions several concerning examples:
- A fake resignation announcement that circulated widely
- Fabricated remarks about senior cricketers that gained substantial traction
- Multiple videos that received lakhs of views, misleading the public and damaging his professional reputation
Commercial Exploitation and Broader Implications
Beyond the reputational damage, Gambhir has alleged that his identity has been exploited for commercial purposes without authorization. This includes the sale of unauthorized merchandise on major e-commerce platforms without any permission or licensing agreements in place.
In his petition, Gambhir has articulated that his identity has been "weaponised" by anonymous accounts to spread misinformation while generating revenue through various means. He emphasizes that the matter extends beyond personal harm, raising significant concerns about individual dignity and the need for robust legal protections in the rapidly evolving context of artificial intelligence technology.
The former cricketer-turned-coach has highlighted how these AI-generated fabrications have created confusion among the public and potentially undermined his professional standing. The case is expected to come before the Delhi High Court in the coming days for consideration of interim relief measures.
This legal action represents one of the most comprehensive challenges to AI-generated identity misuse in India's sporting community, setting potential precedents for how personality rights are protected against emerging technological threats in the digital age.
