West Indian cricket star Andre Fletcher has made a triumphant return to MI Emirates, becoming the most expensive player purchased during the recent ILT20 Auction. The explosive batsman, who has been with the franchise since its inception three years ago, revealed that the team feels like "family" to him in an exclusive interview published by MI Emirates.
Emotional Auction Moment with Family
Fletcher followed the auction proceedings with his wife, anxiously hoping that his current team would make the final bid to secure his services. The cricketer admitted that he knew Dubai Capitals were also interested in acquiring him, thanks to information from his agent, but had no idea about the final amount he would command.
"When it reached a stage when it looked like the Capitals would get me, I just told my wife, 'Please, please, I want to go to MIE'," Fletcher recalled during the emotional interview. The moment the auctioneer declared "going once, going twice, sold to MIE," both Fletcher and his wife erupted in celebration, literally jumping and screaming with joy.
Beyond the Price Tag: Focus on Performance
Despite becoming the highest-paid player in the auction, Fletcher emphasized that money is not his primary motivation. The West Indian stalwart stated that he remains focused on what he can contribute to the team rather than the financial rewards.
"Money is not a big deal for me. I am very grateful for the money and the achievement, but I always bank on what I can bring to whatever team I get selected for," Fletcher explained. "As much as I am happy for being the highest paid player in the Auction, I see more beyond the money."
Strong Team Composition for Coming Season
Fletcher expressed confidence in MI Emirates' squad composition for the upcoming season, describing it as well-balanced with experience and youth. He specifically highlighted the roles of Nicholas Pooran and Kieron Pollard, expressing relief at having them as teammates rather than opponents.
"With the experience of a Pollard with the amount of titles he has won, and the talent of Pooran, we know how gifted he is," Fletcher said. He also praised the team's batting strength, mentioning Kamindu Mendis' particular ability against spin bowling.
The West Indian batsman recalled his outstanding performance from last season, where he scored an unbeaten 96 against Desert Vipers. This remarkable innings helped MI Emirates improve their Net Run Rate and secure a playoff spot. "It's my highest score in the ILT20. It came after not playing a few games," Fletcher remembered. "I was just happy to contribute and be in that partnership."
Humble Beginnings in Grenada
Fletcher opened up about his early life in Grenada, describing the Caribbean nation known for its spices, waterfalls, beaches, and friendly people. He acknowledged Grenada's limited cricket infrastructure, noting the absence of indoor facilities that makes practice difficult during rainy seasons.
The cricketer comes from a family with strong sporting credentials. His mother was a cricketer, while his sister, Sherry Fletcher, represented her country in the Beijing Olympics as a track athlete. Fletcher described his childhood playing cricket with improvised balls and credited his elder brother for developing his aggressive batting mindset.
Reflecting on his journey to professional cricket, Fletcher recalled the sacrifices he made, including walking long distances with his cricket bag to reach training grounds. His story represents the determination and passion that has made him one of the most sought-after players in T20 cricket today.
