David Warner Faces Drunk-Driving Charges in Sydney Incident

Former Australian opening batsman David Warner has found himself in significant legal trouble after being charged with drunk-driving following an incident in the Sydney suburb of Maroubra. According to reports from Australian media, the incident occurred on Tuesday, leading to his arrest by New South Wales Police.

Details of the Arrest and Charges

Warner was pulled over by police officers who were conducting stationary random breath testing on Malabar Road in Maroubra. Authorities noted that a van allegedly stopped short of the testing site and parked, prompting officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command to approach the vehicle.

The 39-year-old cricketer was subjected to a roadside breath test, which returned a positive result for alcohol consumption above the permitted limit. He was subsequently arrested and taken to Maroubra Police Station for further testing.

Blood Alcohol Reading and Legal Consequences

At the police station, a second breath test allegedly recorded Warner's blood alcohol concentration at 0.104. This reading is more than double the legal limit in Australia, which typically stands at 0.05 for fully licensed drivers.

Based on this result, Warner was formally charged with driving with a middle-range prescribed concentration of alcohol (PCA). He has been issued a Field Court Attendance Notice and is directed to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday, May 7, 2026, to face the charges.

Warner's Recent Cricket Career

This legal issue comes after Warner's retirement from international cricket in various formats. He retired from Test cricket in January 2024 and from One Day Internationals immediately following the 2023 ICC Men's ODI World Cup.

His last appearance for Australia was against India in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2024. Warner has been a prominent figure in Australian cricket, known for his aggressive batting style and significant contributions to the national team across all formats.

Police Statement and Ongoing Investigation

The New South Wales Police released an official statement detailing the events: "About 5:30pm today (Sunday 5 April 2026), police were conducting stationary random breath testing on Malabar Road, Maroubra. A van was seen to allegedly stop short of the testing site and park. Officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command approached the vehicle and subjected the driver – a 39-year-old man – to roadside testing which returned a positive result."

The statement continued: "He was arrested and taken to Maroubra Police Station where a second test allegedly returned a reading of 0.104. The man was issued with a Field Court Attendance Notice for drive with middle-range PCA to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 7 May 2026."

This incident marks a serious legal challenge for the retired cricketer, who has maintained a high profile both on and off the field throughout his career. The court appearance next month will determine the legal consequences he faces for the alleged drunk-driving offense.
