CSK Legends Stage Nostalgic Return in Special Fan Event at Chepauk
The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai witnessed a remarkable throwback on Sunday as Chennai Super Kings organized a first-of-its-kind fan engagement event titled 'Roar'. The iconic venue was filled with nostalgia as legendary figures from CSK's illustrious past made a grand entrance, donning their classic yellow jerseys once more.
Exhibition Match Features CSK Icons Against Current Squad
The event featured an exhibition cricket match that pitted CSK's original heroes against the current team roster. Franchise legends including Suresh Raina, Muttiah Muralitharan, Michael Hussey, Matthew Hayden, Ambati Rayudu, and Dwayne Bravo returned to the field where they had created so many memorable moments during their playing careers.
Approximately 28,000 enthusiastic fans packed the stadium, erupting into thunderous cheers as the veteran players demonstrated their enduring skills. The OGs comfortably outperformed the newer generation players, much to the delight of the passionate CSK supporters who had gathered for this special occasion.
Sanju Samson Steals Spotlight Ahead of Debut CSK Season
While the returning legends generated tremendous excitement, the star attraction of the evening proved to be Sanju Samson, who will be making his debut appearance for Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming IPL season. The T20 World Cup-winning wicket-keeper batter received an overwhelming reception from the crowd.
"I'm really happy and grateful to be part of such a great franchise and team," Samson expressed. "It was a goosebumps moment being here. Winning the World Cup for the country was something I had dreamed of for many years, and I'm glad I was able to contribute. Now I'm excited and looking forward to the next couple of months in the IPL with my new team, CSK."
Samson outlined his straightforward approach for the upcoming season: "My strategy will be simple — see the ball and hit the ball. I will look to hit a lot of sixes for the team."
Memorable Duel Between Samson and Muralitharan
One of the evening's most memorable moments occurred when Sanju Samson faced off against Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan. The contest drew the loudest cheers of the event as Samson initially showed respect by playing four consecutive dot balls.
At one point, Samson advanced down the pitch attempting a big shot but missed the delivery completely. In a heartwarming gesture, former captain MS Dhoni chose not to remove the bails, creating a light-hearted moment that brought smiles to players and spectators alike. Samson eventually finished the encounter in style, striking two elegant boundaries that delighted the crowd.
As fans chanted "Twinkle, twinkle, little star, Sanju is a superstar," CSK's beloved former player Suresh Raina praised Samson's addition to the team. "Sanju's inclusion will be a major boost for CSK," Raina stated. "I want them to win the title this time. The team looks very strong with Sanju returning after the World Cup, and there are many youngsters who will learn from MS Dhoni and help secure the trophy."
Hall of Fame Inductions and Fan Engagement
In another significant development during the event, Chennai Super Kings officially inducted Suresh Raina and Matthew Hayden into their inaugural Hall of Fame. This recognition honored their substantial contributions to building CSK's legacy as one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.
The 'Roar' event represented a unique fan engagement initiative ahead of the IPL 2026 season, strengthening the bond between the franchise and its dedicated supporters. Raina emphasized the importance of continued fan support, saying, "I hope the fans continue supporting CSK like they always have. Their enthusiasm is what makes this team special."
The successful event at Chepauk Stadium has generated considerable excitement among cricket enthusiasts as they anticipate the upcoming IPL season, with renewed hope that CSK can add another championship to their impressive record.
