Bangladesh Umpire Sharfuddoula in India Amid BCB's T20 World Cup Boycott Threat
Bangladesh Umpire in India as BCB Boycott Looms

In a development highlighting the complex dynamics of international cricket, Bangladesh's top umpire, Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat, was on duty in Vadodara for the first ODI between India and New Zealand on Sunday. His presence came at a time when the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is formally protesting against traveling to India for the T20 World Cup 2026, citing player safety concerns.

A Diplomatic Tightrope in White Coat

The sight of Sharfuddoula, who served as the third umpire at the BCA stadium in Vadodara, raised eyebrows among fans and observers. This is because the cricketing relations between India and Bangladesh have recently been strained. The tension escalated after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) released Mustafizur Rahman from the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) following instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

As a direct protest against this move and broader security apprehensions, the BCB took a significant step. The board wrote to the International Cricket Council (ICC) requesting that their matches for the T20 World Cup 2026 be moved to a neutral venue, specifically proposing Sri Lanka. The ICC has not yet made a decision on this request, leaving the matter unresolved.

BCB Clarifies Stance on Umpire's Independence

Reacting to questions about Sharfuddoula's participation in India amidst the board's boycott stance, BCB officials provided a clear explanation. They stated that the 49-year-old umpire is not under a direct contract with the BCB but is an ICC-contracted official.

Iftekhar Rahman, the chairman of the BCB's umpire department, clarified the contractual position. "He (Saikat) is an ICC-contracted umpire... he is not contracted with us (BCB)," Rahman told Cricbuzz. He further explained that Sharfuddoula's contract with the BCB includes an automatic leave clause for ICC assignments, meaning the board has no authority to grant or deny permission for such duties. Sharfuddoula also currently heads the BCB's Umpire Education Department.

Who is Umpire Sharfuddoula?

Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat is a pioneering figure in Bangladeshi cricket officiating. A former cricketer who represented Bangladesh in the 1994 ICC Trophy, he transitioned to umpiring after retirement. His international umpiring debut came in a 2010 ODI between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

His career achievements are notable:

  • He is the first and only Bangladeshi umpire to be included in the prestigious ICC Elite Panel.
  • He has officiated in a substantial number of international matches: 32 Tests, 118 ODIs, 75 T20Is, 17 women’s ODIs, and 28 women’s T20Is.
  • In a landmark moment, he became the second Bangladeshi to officiate in a neutral Test match (Australia vs West Indies in Brisbane in 2024).

Sharfuddoula is also slated to officiate in the upcoming T20 World Cup, beginning February 7. His role in Vadodara, therefore, was a routine ICC assignment, separate from the ongoing diplomatic friction between the two cricket boards. The situation underscores the delicate balance between individual professional commitments and broader national sporting politics.
