Balotra Police Crack Down on Major IPL Betting Operation
In a significant crackdown on illegal gambling activities, Balotra police conducted a targeted raid on Saturday night, successfully dismantling a sophisticated IPL betting racket. The operation resulted in the arrest of four alleged bookies and the seizure of substantial evidence, including betting records valued at crores of rupees, 33 mobile phones, and three laptops.
Coordinated Raid Under Police Directives
Balotra Superintendent of Police Ramesh IPS confirmed that the raid was executed as part of a broader initiative to curb illegal cricket betting during the ongoing IPL 2026 season. The police have been directed to take strict legal action against gamblers and bookies involved in such activities. A joint team comprising the District Special Team (DST) and officers from Balotra police station, led by Shishpalsingh RPS (trainee), carried out the operation based on actionable intelligence received on Friday night.
Location and Timing of the Raid
The police raided a rented house located near City Park in Balotra after receiving specific information that organized betting was being conducted during the IPL 2026 match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants. This timely intervention highlights the police's proactive approach in monitoring and disrupting illegal gambling networks during high-profile cricket events.
Arrested Accused and Seized Items
The four individuals arrested in connection with the betting racket have been identified as Javed, Manish, Asraf, and Mahendra. During the raid, police confiscated a wide array of equipment used in the betting operations, including:
- Three laptops
- 33 mobile phones
- A "piano attachi" (a specialized mobile setup for betting)
- Diaries containing detailed accounts worth crores of rupees
- A Wi-Fi router
- Multiple chargers and other betting-related accessories
Sophisticated and Evasive Betting Methods
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused were operating the betting racket in an organized and highly technical manner. To avoid detection, they frequently changed their locations, demonstrating a deliberate effort to evade law enforcement. Police had been monitoring the group's activities for the past month, keeping them under close surveillance before executing the raid.
Use of Technology in Illegal Betting
The group allegedly utilized online video conferencing applications to connect with customers and stream live IPL matches, enabling bettors to place wagers in real-time. This modern approach underscores how technology is increasingly being leveraged to facilitate illegal gambling, posing new challenges for authorities tasked with enforcement.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
A case has been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the accused have been produced in court. They have been remanded as the investigation continues, with police working to uncover further details about the network's operations and potential accomplices. This case serves as a stern warning to those involved in illegal betting activities, especially during major sporting events like the IPL.
