The spirit of endurance and community solidarity shone brightly in Pune as a dedicated group of ultra runners pushed their physical and mental limits in a non-stop 24-hour marathon. The event, held at the Amanora Sports Arena, transformed into a vibrant festival of perseverance, drawing hundreds of Punekars to support the athletes and a noble cause.
A Test of Mind and Body Through Day and Night
The marathon, which unfolded without a single pause, saw participants running continuously from day into night and through to the next morning. Leading this formidable challenge were ultra runners Santosh Padmanabhan and Gagan Buttan, who completed the full 24 hours on their feet. They were bolstered by constant cheers and encouragement from the community that gathered at the venue.
Reflecting on the profound experience, Santosh Padmanabhan shared, "Twenty-four hours teaches you how powerful a steady mind can be, especially when the whole community lifts you." His sentiment was echoed by Gagan Buttan, who added, "There is no sleep and no breaks. You learn to trust your training and the people cheering for you." First-time ultra runner Vivek Sonagra captured the essence of the struggle, stating, "At some point the fatigue becomes meaningless. You just keep moving."
Community Unites for a Charitable Cause
The event was far more than just a running competition; it was a powerful community gathering. Hundreds of residents, including families, children, and senior citizens, flocked to the arena, creating a festival-like atmosphere filled with music, performances, and unwavering support. While ultra runners tackled the full 24-hour challenge, the venue remained active with shorter running categories, ensuring constant energy.
Volunteers, residents, and participants cycled in throughout the day and night, contributing to an atmosphere built on endurance and generosity. Organiser Vinayak Lele highlighted this unique bond, saying, "Running became a reason for everyone to show up for each other and that’s what made this event a success." Other notable participants included Jerode Benjamin A., who also completed the 24-hour run, and Manmohan Sharma, who finished a 50 km run.
Funds Raised for Vulnerable Sections
The core aim of this non-commercial event was twofold: to spread awareness about the benefits of running and to raise crucial funds for charity. The proceeds from the marathon are designated for several local organizations working with vulnerable sections of society. The beneficiaries include:
- Sarthak Seva Sangh
- Spherule Foundation
- Sai Vishwanath Memorial Trust (SVMT)
- Adarsh School
- Amrut Bharati Shikshan Sanstha – Mahavir Nivasi Matimand School
The funds will specifically aid children and women supported by these trusts and institutions. The event was organized by the running community Runner’s High, with support from venue partner Amanora Park Town and health partner Sahyadri Hospitals.
The 24-hour community marathon in Pune has set a remarkable example of how sports can transcend personal achievement to become a powerful vehicle for social good and collective spirit.
