Ahmedabad Accelerates Preparations for 2030 Commonwealth Games with Major Infrastructure Push

As the 2030 Commonwealth Games approach, Ahmedabad is making significant strides in developing the necessary sports infrastructure. The wheels have been set in motion with ongoing land acquisitions and the submission of masterplan designs to ensure the city is ready to host this prestigious international event.

Aquatic Centre Plans Submitted for Approval

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) town development department has recently received detailed plans for the Aquatic Arena cum Aquatic Centre. This facility is a key component of the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave and is currently awaiting approval from consultants. Once the plans are greenlit, tenders for the construction of this state-of-the-art aquatic centre will be floated, marking a crucial step forward in the project's timeline.

Land Acquisition and Legal Challenges

A state government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that land acquisition efforts are in their final stages. However, authorities are facing litigation over certain portions of land near the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera. These disputed areas belong to organizations such as the Bhartiya Seva Samaj, Sadashiv Pragya Mandal, and Sant Shri Asaram Ashram. Despite these legal hurdles, the official emphasized that the acquisition process is nearing completion, with changes also being made in Town Planning (TP) schemes to acquire reserved plots.

Master Plan for Sardar Patel Sports Enclave

Looking ahead to the Commonwealth Games and the potential bid for the 2036 Olympics, the Gujarat state government has prepared a comprehensive master plan for the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave. This expansive project will cover approximately 650 acres in Motera, encompassing the Narendra Modi Stadium and its surroundings. The construction of the enclave, estimated at Rs 5,050 crore, is being planned in two distinct packages to streamline development.

Project Timeline and Package Details

Originally, the plan was to float tenders by November 2025, finalize them by the end of 2025, and complete the project by December 2028. However, delays in land acquisition due to litigation have impacted this schedule. Nevertheless, the process is now in its final stages, with authorities optimistic about moving forward.

  • Package I: This phase includes the aquatic centre, with an estimated cost of Rs 2,250 crore. It is a focal point of the initial construction efforts.
  • Package II: Valued at Rs 2,800 crore, this package will feature an indoor arena, a tennis centre, the National Institute of Sports Excellence, and athlete housing. Sources indicate that building plans for the institute and housing will be submitted for approval soon.

Strategic Importance and Future Prospects

The development of the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave is not only crucial for the 2030 Commonwealth Games but also positions Ahmedabad as a contender for hosting the 2036 Olympics. This strategic investment in sports infrastructure aims to boost the city's global profile and provide world-class facilities for athletes and spectators alike. The ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to timely execution, despite the challenges posed by legal disputes and acquisition complexities.

As Ahmedabad continues to advance its preparations, the focus remains on ensuring that all infrastructure components are completed efficiently and to international standards, setting the stage for a successful hosting of the Commonwealth Games and potentially other major sporting events in the future.
