In a dramatic protest on Tuesday, members of the Youth Congress in Ajmer staged a demonstration at the gate of a government college, burning an effigy of Principal Manoj Kumar Borwal and demanding his immediate resignation within a strict seven-day deadline.
Controversial Remarks Spark Outrage
The protest was triggered by comments made by Principal Borwal during his speech at the international conference of the Rajasthan Sociological Association, held at Sanatan Dharam Government College in Beawar on January 24. In his address, Borwal reportedly referred to Pakistan as the elder brother of India and controversially stated that there were only three freedom fighters: Mahatma Gandhi, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and B.R. Ambedkar.
Viral Video Intensifies Backlash
A video recording of Borwal's speech quickly went viral on social media platforms, leading to widespread outrage from various political and social groups across the region. The remarks were perceived by many as inappropriate and unpatriotic, particularly coming from an educator heading a government institution.
Later, when confronted by media representatives, Principal Borwal attempted to clarify his statements, claiming he was being sarcastic in his remarks about Pakistan and that people had misunderstood his intentions. He stated, "I was being sarcastic against Pakistan and people took me wrong."
Youth Congress Takes Firm Stand
Mohit Malhotra, the president of the Youth Congress in Ajmer, expressed strong disapproval of the principal's comments. He emphasized, "Those who are heading educational institutions should not give such comments which are against the country." Malhotra argued that educators in positions of authority have a responsibility to uphold national values and avoid making statements that could be interpreted as anti-national.
One protester at the demonstration voiced even stronger sentiments, stating that if the principal indeed had a soft corner for Pakistan, he should vacate his position immediately. The protester added that such remarks from an educational leader send the wrong message to students and could potentially influence young minds in undesirable ways.
Police Deployment and Traffic Disruption
To maintain law and order during the heated protest, police forces were deployed both inside and outside the college gate. The demonstration caused significant disruption to normal activities in the area, with traffic on Beawar Road being particularly affected.
Police officials had a challenging time managing the situation and clearing the way for vehicles, as the protest created bottlenecks and slowed movement along the busy road.
