Vinu Job Kuzhimannil Wins Changanassery Assembly Seat

Kerala Congress candidate Vinu Job Kuzhimannil has emerged victorious in the Changanassery Assembly constituency, securing over 55,000 votes. He defeated Kerala Congress (M) candidate Job Maichil by a margin of 8,368 votes in a closely contested battle.

Changanassery Constituency Overview

Changanassery, numbered 99, is located in the Kottayam district of Kerala and falls under the Kottayam parliamentary constituency. Established in 1957 and redrawn during the 2008 delimitation, it includes the Changanassery municipality, panchayats such as Kanjirapally fringes and Paippad, and has approximately 172,000 electors. This general seat is known for its rubber plantations, a dominant Syrian Christian community, vibrant festivals at St. Berchmans Church and other shrines, educational institutions, trade hubs, and an NRI-driven economy. The constituency blends rural farming with semi-urban vibrancy along the Pamba River basin.

Political Dynamics

The Kerala Congress (M), aligned with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) since 2016, has held sway in the region, with Finson Viswanath as the current MLA. In the 2021 elections, Viswanath won 60,941 votes (41.39 per cent), defeating Indian National Congress candidate Jobi Thomas, who secured 57,152 votes, by a margin of 3,789 votes (2.57 per cent) at a turnout of 75.12 per cent. This result reversed the United Democratic Front's edge from 2011 and cemented the LDF's shift through the KC(M) alliance. Earlier, the KC(M) had oscillated between factions, while the Bharatiya Janata Party hovers at around 12-14 per cent vote share.

Key Issues in the Constituency

Key issues affecting voters include rubber farmer woes due to price crashes and pests, youth unemployment spurring migration, monsoon flooding along rivers, congested roads during festivals, water scarcity despite monsoons, and strained healthcare and schools amid population growth. There are also demands for better irrigation, improved public transport to Kochi, and eco-preservation of wetlands. These socioeconomic and faith dynamics fuel razor-close battles between the LDF and UDF in this culturally rich central Kerala crossroads.
