Chennai's Villivakkam Constituency Puts Civic Accountability in the Spotlight
In a significant move ahead of the elections, the Federation of Anna Nagar Residents' Associations (FOARA) organized a virtual 'meet the candidates' session for voters in the Villivakkam constituency. This event provided a revealing glimpse into the key factors that may decide this tightly contested seat, shifting the focus beyond mere party loyalty to pressing issues of civic accountability and local governance.
Candidates Address Critical Local Concerns
Three of the four major candidates participated in the session, engaging directly with pointed questions from residents. The discussions centered on urgent problems plaguing the area, including deteriorating sewer systems, encroached footpaths that hinder pedestrian movement, and a worrying rise in drug abuse cases. The fourth candidate, AIADMK's S R Vijayakumar, was unavailable for the forum, leaving his stance on these matters unclear.
With DMK fielding Karthik Mohan, TVK's Aadhav Arjuna making his electoral debut, and NTK's lone transgender candidate S Roshini also in the race, Villivakkam is emerging as one of the more unpredictable electoral battles in Chennai's northern region. The FOARA session, conducted in 30-minute slots for each candidate, laid bare both the deep-seated issues facing the constituency and the proposed solutions from aspiring legislators.
Residents Present Charter of Demands
The residents' association presented a detailed charter of demands, highlighting infrastructure woes that demand immediate attention. Key points included:
- Maintenance of aging sewerage pipelines and electricity networks, which are plagued by frequent power cuts and dangerously exposed cables.
- Resolution of rampant encroachments on public spaces, affecting daily life and safety.
- Addressing the health hazards posed by the Otteri Nullah, once a functional drain but now a conduit for industrial effluents and untreated sewage. Locals are calling for comprehensive modernization rather than incremental repairs.
Candidate Responses and Visions
DMK candidate Karthik Mohan responded by asking the association to submit issues pertaining to both Anna Nagar and Villivakkam constituencies. He assured residents that these would be addressed promptly through relevant government departments. When questioned about freebies, Mohan stated, "It is the people's right to receive benefits, and they should not be viewed as freebies."
In contrast, TVK's Aadhav Arjuna struck a different tone. As a newcomer to electoral politics, he emphasized reform and people-centric governance, prioritizing safer neighborhoods and urgent action on water scarcity and drug abuse issues. NTK candidate Roshini did not make specific comments on constituency-level problems but spoke broadly about her party's vision for governance and social change.
Voter Awareness and Impact
FOARA secretary Sandhya Vedullapalli noted that many residents were previously unaware of the candidates, particularly those from TVK and NTK. "After the interaction, we now have a clear picture of their vision and how they plan to tackle our local issues," she said, underscoring the session's role in enhancing voter education and engagement.
This virtual forum has not only highlighted the critical civic challenges in Villivakkam but also set a precedent for accountability-driven campaigning in Chennai's electoral landscape. As voters weigh their options, infrastructure maintenance, public health, and drug abuse are poised to be decisive factors in this unpredictable contest.
