In Vadodara, a growing number of young men are encountering significant challenges in their search for a bride, not due to personal shortcomings but because of deep-rooted social barriers and imbalanced sex ratios within their communities. This issue has led many to an unlikely source: the women's protection home in Nizampura, where they hope to find prospective partners, yet the facility reports no eligible brides available.
Surge in Inquiries Following Recent Wedding
The recent wedding of an inmate named Deepa on March 11 has sparked a notable increase in calls to the protection home. This event, which garnered attention for offering a fresh start to a woman raised at the home, has also shed light on a stark reality: a long queue of prospective grooms is waiting, but there are no brides to match them with. Hetaxi Champaneri, manager of the protection home, stated, "We are receiving numerous calls daily, but none of the approximately 50 women residing here qualify for marriage. While we previously received such inquiries, the number has risen significantly after the recent wedding."
Despite being advised against it, many young men have proactively submitted their biodatas to the facility. Even before Deepa's wedding, the home had accumulated over 100 such profiles, and this number continues to grow steadily, highlighting the desperation and urgency among these individuals.
Strict Eligibility Criteria and Profile of Prospective Grooms
The protection home arranges marriages exclusively for women who are orphans or whose parents cannot be traced. Women seeking shelter due to family disputes or for protection purposes are not eligible for such matches. What stands out, according to officials, is the profile of the men reaching out. Many are well-educated and financially stable, including engineers, graduates, teachers, and small business owners—profiles that would typically find matches without difficulty in other contexts.
However, social realities paint a different picture. Champaneri explained, "Some youths attribute the shortage to few eligible women in their caste due to skewed sex ratios. Others cite not owning agricultural land as a barrier to finding a bride." This disconnect between personal qualifications and societal constraints underscores the complexity of the marriage market in the region.

The protection home has facilitated a limited number of weddings in recent years, with six arranged in 2016 and only two in 2022.
