Udupi DC Orders Eco-Tourism Roadmap by April 10

Udupi Deputy Commissioner Mandates Comprehensive Eco-Tourism Roadmap

In a significant move to bolster sustainable tourism, Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa TK has directed all tourism stakeholders in Udupi district to prepare and present a detailed roadmap for the development of eco-friendly tourism. The directive was issued during a high-level meeting chaired by the DC at her office in Rajathadri on Saturday.

Focus on Infrastructure and Promotion

Swaroopa highlighted that Udupi's natural and cultural assets—including its scenic beaches, the Western Ghats, forests, waterfalls, and prominent religious centres—attract thousands of tourists annually. However, she emphasized that before undertaking any tourism development activities, priority must be given to enhancing basic infrastructure. This includes ensuring adequate drinking water facilities, clean toilets, sufficient parking spaces, and comfortable accommodation at all tourist destinations.

Referring to earlier instructions, the DC has set a deadline of April 10 for the stakeholder team to submit a comprehensive report outlining key focus areas that support tourism growth. The report is expected to detail actionable strategies and innovative proposals to drive the sector forward.

Boosting Visitor Engagement and Revenue

Noting a steady increase in tourist footfall, Swaroopa stressed the importance of providing comprehensive information on both popular and lesser-known destinations. She pointed out that detailed information about local accommodation options would encourage visitors to extend their stays in the district, thereby boosting revenue and expanding the tourism sector.

Furthermore, the DC underscored the need to identify and develop new tourist spots while improving accessibility to existing ones. She revealed that nearly 90% of tourists visiting Udupi are unaware of its full tourism potential, calling for more effective use of social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to promote destinations and engage a wider audience.

Leveraging Cultural and Culinary Heritage

Swaroopa expressed confidence that Udupi has the potential to emerge as a leading tourist destination if its rich culture, traditions, unique practices, religious significance, and renowned cuisine are promoted effectively. She urged stakeholders to develop innovative ideas and proposals that highlight these aspects, making the district more attractive to both domestic and international tourists.

The meeting also discussed broader strategies to promote Udupi district at national and international levels, aiming to position it as a premier eco-tourism hub. Key officials present included Assistant Director of Tourism Vindhya NM, along with various tourism stakeholders and other departmental representatives.
