TVK president Vijay is scheduled to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi on Monday, in connection with the ongoing investigation into the tragic Karur stampede. The incident, which occurred during a TVK campaign event on September 27, 2025, resulted in the deaths of 41 people.
CBI Summons and Travel Plans
The CBI had issued a formal notice to Vijay earlier this month, invoking Section 179 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), compelling his appearance for examination. The summons was officially served on January 6. According to party sources, Vijay will depart from Chennai early on Monday via a chartered flight and is expected to reach the CBI headquarters in the morning for the questioning session.
Security Arrangements and Political Reactions
Ahead of his crucial visit, the TVK has proactively approached the Delhi Police, requesting adequate security arrangements for its president. This move has sparked political commentary, with BJP leader Vanathi Srinivasan remarking, "The Delhi police will give better security than what was given by the DMK government during the Karur TVK rally." Her statement underscores the ongoing political tensions surrounding the case.
Background of the Probe and Evidence
The investigation into the deadly stampede was transferred to the central agency by the Supreme Court, marking a significant development in the case. Prior to questioning Vijay, the CBI investigators have already examined several senior TVK functionaries in Delhi. During these interactions, party leaders submitted video evidence which, they allege, points to lapses by the Tamil Nadu state government. As part of the forensic scrutiny, the CBI has also examined the campaign vehicle used by Vijay on the day of the event, and the driver of the vehicle has been questioned.
The appearance of the TVK chief before the CBI is a pivotal moment in the probe, which seeks to determine the causes and accountability for one of the state's recent major tragedies.
