Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday to stake his party's claim to form the government. However, the Governor rejected the claim, stating that TVK lacks the requisite numbers in the assembly to prove a majority.
Governor Rejects TVK's Claim
Governor Arlekar, after reviewing the letter submitted by Vijay, said that the party does not have the support of enough MLAs to form a stable government. The Governor's decision came as a setback for TVK, which had hoped to capitalize on its recent electoral gains.
Vijay's Response
In a statement, Vijay expressed disappointment but said his party respects the constitutional process. He added that TVK would continue to work for the people of Tamil Nadu and prepare for future elections.
The development comes amid heightened political activity in the state ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. TVK, which has been positioning itself as a third front, has been reaching out to various parties and independent MLAs to garner support.
Political analysts say that the rejection of the claim highlights the challenges faced by new parties in forming governments without a clear majority. TVK's next move will be closely watched as the state gears up for the upcoming polls.
