TVK President T Velmurugan Exits DMK Alliance, Forgoes Assembly Election Candidacy
In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, T Velmurugan, the president of the Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK), has announced his decision to not contest the upcoming state assembly election. This announcement comes shortly after his party's departure from the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, marking a notable shift in the regional political landscape.
Focus on Party Development Over Personal Candidacy
Velmurugan made his stance clear through a video released on social media platforms. In the statement, he emphasized that he will dedicate his efforts to strengthening the TVK across Tamil Nadu rather than pursuing a personal electoral bid. "I will not contest in this election. I will travel across the state and will work for the welfare of the party," Velmurugan declared. However, he clarified that other functionaries from the TVK will participate in the election, ensuring the party's presence in the political fray.
Background of the Alliance Split and Unmet Demands
The decision to exit the alliance stems from unresolved issues with the DMK. Velmurugan, who previously won from the Panruti constituency in 2021 as a DMK ally, had sought an additional seat for the upcoming election, specifically targeting the Neyveli constituency. When the DMK refused to accommodate this request, Velmurugan presented a 10-point charter of demands and stated his intention to join any alliance that would commit to fulfilling them. With no positive response from the DMK, he ultimately chose to withdraw from the Secular Progressive Alliance, citing a lack of alignment on key issues.
This move highlights the ongoing negotiations and tensions within Tamil Nadu's political coalitions, as parties strategize for the assembly polls. Velmurugan's focus on party expansion suggests a long-term vision for the TVK, potentially positioning it as an independent force in future elections.
