TVK Founder Velmurugan Exits DMK Alliance, Rejects BJP-Led NDA in Tamil Nadu
In a significant political development, Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) founder T Velmurugan has announced his party's departure from the DMK-led secular progressive alliance (SPA). This move makes TVK the first and only party to quit the DMK coalition ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, marking a notable shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape.
Seat-Sharing Dispute Triggers Exit
The decision follows a contentious seat-sharing disagreement between TVK and the DMK. Velmurugan demanded at least one additional seat compared to the previous election, but the DMK declined, citing the need to accommodate nine new parties within the alliance. This impasse highlights the challenges of coalition management in a competitive electoral environment.
Velmurugan's Political Journey and Grievances
In the 2021 assembly election, Velmurugan contested and won a seat under the DMK symbol in the Panruti constituency of Cuddalore district. This time, he intended to contest from the Neyveli constituency, also in Cuddalore district. Despite being part of the DMK alliance for the past five years, Velmurugan expressed frustration over what he described as a "big brother attitude" from the DMK.
He accused some ministers of frequently snubbing him when he raised demands, both inside and outside the state assembly. "They fulfilled only a few demands, and when I questioned, they were upset and asked how a smaller party like TVK could question a bigger party like DMK," Velmurugan stated, underscoring the power dynamics at play.
Rejection of BJP-Led NDA and Ideological Stance
Simultaneously, Velmurugan announced that TVK will not join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He emphasized, "We will not be part of the BJP alliance which divides people on the lines of religion," reflecting his commitment to secular principles. This dual rejection positions TVK as an independent force, distancing itself from both major national alliances.
Future Plans and Broader Concerns
Velmurugan clarified that seats are not his primary concern, stating his main intention is to work for the welfare of all Tamil society. He mentioned that TVK will deliberate on whether to contest alone or offer only electoral support in the upcoming polls. Additionally, he criticized DMK leader Stalin, alleging that officials with RSS ideology are misleading him on issues like caste surveys and reservations for backward classes and downtrodden communities.
This announcement could influence voter sentiment and alliance strategies in Tamil Nadu, as parties gear up for the assembly elections. The exit of TVK from the DMK fold may prompt other smaller parties to reassess their positions, potentially reshaping political alliances in the state.
