Trichy Woman Dies by Suicide Following Alleged Assault by DMK Workers Over Gift Distribution
In a tragic incident that has shocked the community, a 25-year-old woman from Manachanallur in Trichy district died by suicide on Tuesday. The victim, identified as Sindhuja, was allegedly abused and beaten by local DMK workers after she demanded gift items being distributed by the party.
Details of the Incident
According to district superintendent of police S Selvanagarathinam, the events unfolded around 7:30 PM on Monday. DMK workers were distributing gift items to villagers as per party instructions in Vaazhaikattai village, where Sindhuja resided. When Sindhuja approached and asked for the items, the group informed her that they were reserved exclusively for party members and their relatives.
Altercation Escalates to Violence
In response, Sindhuja stated that she would question the DMK candidate during vote canvassing. This remark provoked the group, who allegedly caught her by her hair and dress, and proceeded to beat her with a broomstick. The assault left Sindhuja severely distressed.
Suicide and Aftermath
The following day, upon her husband Prasanth's return from work, a distressed Sindhuja confronted him, accusing him of inaction regarding the incident. When Prasanth suggested they handle the matter in the morning and asked her to go to sleep, she pushed him out, locked the door, and hanged herself.
Neighbors quickly intervened, breaking open the door and rushing her to a hospital. Unfortunately, she was declared brought dead upon arrival.
Police Action and Legal Proceedings
On Wednesday, Sindhuja's family and relatives blocked the Trichy-Lalgudi Road, demanding strict action against the perpetrators. Police pacified the protesters and subsequently registered a case at the Kollidam police station.
Charges Filed Against Nine Individuals
- The accused include Raja, Rajendran, Ravikumar, Rajkumar, Sureshkumar, Pushpam, Rajeswari, Karthiga, and Angumani.
- They face charges under sections 296 (obscene acts), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351 (criminal intimidation), 79 (insult to the modesty of a woman), and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
- Additional charges under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and the Representation of the People Act have also been applied.
Police arrested six of the accused, who were produced in court and remanded to judicial custody. The remaining three are currently absconding, with SP Selvanagarathinam assuring that they will be apprehended soon.
