Trichy Residents Withdraw Election Boycott After Road Safety Assurance

The Federation for Retrieval of Trichy Palpannai-Thuvakudi Service Road has officially withdrawn its announcement to boycott the upcoming elections. This decision follows two rounds of productive peace talks conducted by the district administration and the election department. The talks focused on addressing the residents' long-standing demand for wider service roads along the Trichy-Thanjavur National Highway to enhance safety and prevent accidents.

Administration Assures Swift Resolution

During the negotiations, officials from the election department and those overseeing land acquisition for the service roads provided firm assurances. They committed to completing the work promptly once the model code of conduct expires. This assurance convinced the residents to participate in the election scheduled for April 23, marking a significant shift from their earlier stance.

Progress in Land Acquisition Detailed

S Subramanian, president of the federation, shared specific updates from the talks. "The special tahsildar informed us that the final phase of land acquisition is currently underway in Tharanallur and Ariyamangalam revenue villages," he stated. "We were also assured that land acquisition will soon be initiated in other revenue villages, ensuring comprehensive coverage."

Timeline of Negotiations and Key Demands

The federation had initially announced the poll boycott on April 3 and formally communicated this decision to the district election department via a letter. In response, the department organized peace talks with federation representatives on April 4 and 13 at the Trichy RDO office.

  • The first round of talks on April 4 proved inconclusive, failing to yield immediate results.
  • During the second round on April 13, residents emphasized a critical demand: that the width of the service lanes must strictly adhere to the order issued by the Madras High Court on October 15, 2019.
  • Officials agreed to this condition, leading to the withdrawal of the boycott call and restoring electoral participation.

This resolution highlights the effectiveness of dialogue between citizens and authorities in addressing infrastructure and safety concerns, ensuring that electoral processes proceed smoothly while prioritizing public welfare.
