Trichy Farmers Demand Swift Paddy Procurement & Extended Cauvery Water Release
Trichy Farmers Seek Paddy Procurement, Cauvery Water Extension

Trichy Farmers Press for Urgent Action on Paddy Procurement and Irrigation Water

During the monthly grievance redressal meeting held at the Trichy collectorate on Friday, local farmers voiced critical demands for immediate government intervention to support their agricultural activities. The meeting saw farmers from across the district seeking swift solutions to pressing issues affecting their livelihoods.

Immediate Opening of Procurement Centers for Samba Paddy

Farmers emphasized that they have commenced harvesting their samba paddy crop, which was planted during the months of August and September. They urged district officials and the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation to promptly establish direct procurement centers (DPCs) throughout Trichy district. The goal is to ensure smooth and timely purchase of their produce, avoiding the delays and complications experienced during the kuruvai procurement season a few months earlier.

N Rajendiran, a farmers' representative from Vayalur, stated, "We request the immediate opening of DPCs to facilitate smooth procurement and prevent the problems that occurred during the kuruvai procurement a few months ago." Additionally, farmers called for stringent measures to eradicate corruption at these centers, demanding strict action against any staff members found soliciting bribes.

Extension of Cauvery Water Release for Irrigation

Another key demand was the extension of the release of Cauvery water from the Mettur dam beyond the scheduled date of January 28. Farmers highlighted that continued water supply is essential for those who initiated their samba and thaladi paddy cultivation later in the season, as well as for farmers whose crops have not yet reached full maturity.

P Viswanathan, another farmers' representative, explained, "Water from the Cauvery is needed for farmers who started their samba and thaladi paddy cultivation late as well as for farmers whose crops have not yet fully matured." This extension is seen as vital to ensure crop health and yield, particularly in light of variable planting timelines.

Unresolved Compensation for Crop Losses

Farmers also raised concerns about pending compensation for crop losses incurred due to recent natural calamities. Despite government announcements of relief measures, many farmers reported not having received any funds. They urged officials to address this issue promptly and ensure the disbursement of compensation at the earliest possible opportunity.

Official Response and Assurance

In response to these grievances, District Collector V Saravanan assured the farmers that their concerns would be looked into. He acknowledged the urgency of the matters presented and committed to exploring solutions to facilitate better support for the agricultural community in Trichy.

The meeting underscored the ongoing challenges faced by farmers in the region, highlighting the need for efficient administrative action to safeguard their interests and sustain agricultural productivity.
