About Chowrangee Constituency
Chowringhee is a key assembly constituency in the Kolkata district, falling under the Kolkata Uttar (North) Lok Sabha seat. It is located in the heart of Kolkata, near the iconic Chowringhee Road and surrounding areas, encompassing the central business district. The constituency has historically witnessed one of the lowest voter turnouts in the state, approximately 54 percent in 2021, attributed to its transient and floating population.
Historical Performance
In the 2021 assembly elections, TMC's Nayana Bandyopadhyay won the seat with close to 63 percent of the vote, defeating her BJP rival by a wide margin. The Congress finished third with about 13 percent. In 2016 as well, TMC held Chowringhee comfortably. The seat has remained in the TMC column throughout the party's tenure in power.
Key Issues and Demographics
Given its location in central Kolkata, which includes a mix of commercial establishments, hotels, markets, and upper-class residential pockets, the constituency's primary concerns revolve around traffic management, commercial regulation, and civic upkeep. The electorate includes a significant number of professionals, business owners, and residents from affluent neighborhoods.
