The soaring mercury levels across Kerala have escalated into a major concern for the district administration and organizers of the iconic Thrissur Pooram festival. Scheduled for April 26, the grand event is anticipated to draw a staggering crowd of nearly 20 lakh people, amplifying worries about public health and safety under extreme heat conditions.
Meteorological Warnings and Temperature Projections
According to officials from the India Meteorological Department, while scattered rains and thunderstorms are forecast for the days leading up to Pooram, the temperature on the festival day itself is likely to exceed 35 degrees Celsius. This prediction has triggered urgent preparations to mitigate the risks associated with such intense heat.
Multi-Faceted Concerns: From Devotees to Elephants
Beyond the obvious health risks for the massive assembly of devotees in Thrissur, authorities and organizers are deeply troubled by the potential impact of rising temperatures on the elephants scheduled for the traditional parade. Additionally, there are significant apprehensions regarding the safe stocking and transportation of fireworks, which are a central element of the Pooram celebrations.
High-Level Meeting Convenes to Formulate Precautionary Measures
In response to these mounting concerns, District Collector Sikha Surendran convened a critical meeting of officials from various departments on Friday. The gathering aimed to discuss and coordinate comprehensive precautionary measures for the festival. Attendees included representatives from:
- Disaster Management Department
- Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO)
- Thrissur Corporation
- Women and Child Welfare Department
- District Administration
- Cochin Devaswom Board
- Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu Devaswoms
Comprehensive Safety Directives Issued by Collector
District Collector Sikha Surendran issued a series of specific directives to ensure the well-being of all participants. Foremost among these was the imperative to prevent dehydration and other heat-related health issues among Pooram attendees. She mandated the installation of shades at all possible points to shield people from direct solar exposure.
Furthermore, the collector ordered that adequate ambulance facilities must be on standby to promptly transport any festival-goers who develop health complications to nearby hospitals. Special arrangements are also to be made to enable disabled individuals to comfortably watch and participate in the Pooram festivities.
Special Care for Parade Elephants
Recognizing the vulnerability of the elephants to the heat, the collector outlined specific welfare measures. Elephants must be provided with cooling feed such as watermelon, and there must be consistent efforts to frequently wet the ground on which the animals will be standing during the parade. These steps are crucial to prevent heat stress and ensure the majestic creatures' comfort and safety throughout the event.
