Telangana Government Announces Major Infrastructure Projects to Ease Traffic and Boost Connectivity
In a significant move to address urban congestion and enhance regional connectivity, the Telangana government has unveiled a series of ambitious infrastructure projects. Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy made the announcements during a session in the state assembly on Tuesday, outlining plans that include elevated corridors, highway expansions, and a comprehensive road network upgrade.
Double-Decker Elevated Corridor for Hyderabad's Eastern Corridor
The flagship project is a 5.5-kilometer double-decker elevated corridor planned between LB Nagar and Hayatnagar in Hyderabad. This initiative aims to decongest the heavily trafficked NH-65 stretch, which currently forces commuters to travel an extra two kilometers due to inadequate crossing facilities. The minister highlighted that this leads to severe congestion and safety concerns for nearly 10–12 lakh residents across 60–70 colonies in the city's eastern corridor.
The proposed structure will feature a three-tier design: service roads at ground level, highway traffic in the middle, and a Metro rail line on top. With an estimated cost of 941 crore, the project is set to be jointly funded by the Centre (741 crore) and the state government along with Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (200 crore). Proposals were submitted to the Centre on March 17, and approvals are expected shortly, after which tenders will be invited.
Complementary Highway and Flyover Projects
In related developments, the 545-crore project to expand the LB Nagar–Malkapur stretch of NH-65 into a six-lane road is nearing completion, with about 80% of the work already finished. Additionally, the state has agreed to bear 53.55 crore for a 1.2-km double-decker flyover between Madinaguda and BHEL, further strengthening the Hyderabad–Mumbai highway corridor.
Mannanur–Srisailam Elevated Corridor for Pilgrim Safety
Another major project is a 52-kilometer elevated corridor from Mannanur to Srisailam, estimated to cost 7,600 crore. This corridor is designed to improve safety along the ghat road and ensure faster access to the temple town of Srisailam. The detailed project report has been prepared and is in the final stages of approval, with the state cabinet already clearing the proposal and forwarding it to the Centre for final sanction.
Once completed, this project is expected to significantly cut travel time, enabling pilgrims to undertake same-day visits to Srisailam while enhancing safety in the forest and ghat sections.
Statewide Road Network Upgrade Under Hybrid Annuity Model
Beyond these specific corridors, the government is embarking on a massive road infrastructure upgrade across Telangana. Under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) Phase-I, road works covering 6,092 km have been taken up at an estimated cost of 13,006 crore. These works are being executed through 441 projects grouped into 34 packages. Tenders for 24 packages have been received and are under scrutiny, with the remaining 10 packages expected to complete the tender process within a week.
Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy emphasized the government's commitment to transparency and efficiency, noting the introduction of a direct debit mechanism to facilitate timely payments to contractors and expedite work. The overall plan involves an investment of around 20,000 crore to transform all roads into BT roads, providing seamless connectivity to every village while strengthening mandal, district, and state-level networks.
The focus is on developing a model road network with single-lane, double-lane, and four-lane roads to meet future traffic demands. "This initiative is expected to substantially improve transport infrastructure and provide seamless connectivity, contributing to economic growth and public convenience across the state," the minister added.
