Telangana Intensifies Development Efforts After Declaring Naxalism-Free Status
In a significant announcement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared in Parliament that India is now free of Naxalism, following three years of sustained anti-Maoist operations. In response, Telangana has ramped up efforts to consolidate these gains along its sensitive border with Chhattisgarh, shifting from security-focused measures to development-driven outreach.
Strategic Visit to Former Maoist Stronghold
On Tuesday, senior police and forest officials visited Mulugu district, an area once known as a Maoist stronghold. The delegation was led by DGP B Shivadhar Reddy and included top officials such as Greyhounds chief Anil Kumar. They traveled to Pamunuru village in the remote Karregutta hills, where they inaugurated a new police outpost in a location that previously served as a key Maoist hub.
DGP Shivadhar Reddy reaffirmed that Telangana is now free from Naxalism, emphasizing that the focus has transitioned towards delivering development in tribal regions that have remained isolated for decades due to insurgent activity. This visit reflects a broader strategy aimed at securing the region while integrating it with mainstream infrastructure and essential services.
Infrastructure Development and Connectivity
As part of this initiative, officials also inaugurated a newly constructed road on the Telangana side of the Karregutta hills. Of the proposed 30-kilometer stretch, 12 kilometers of a temporary soil road have been completed. The DGP noted that this road could eventually be upgraded into a permanent bitumen-topped surface, highlighting that improved connectivity would help local communities engage more easily with the outside world.
Police officers stated that the road is expected to significantly ease transportation, reduce travel time, and eliminate the need for long detours, thereby enhancing accessibility for residents in these remote areas.
Tourism Potential and Community Support
Senior officers conducted a tour of the forested region, underscoring its untapped potential. With scenic landscapes and waterfalls, authorities believe the area holds promise for tourism, which could generate sustainable livelihoods for local tribal communities.
In an effort to build trust and support, officials distributed essential supplies and extended livelihood assistance to villagers, including providing a motorcycle and an autorickshaw. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests C Suvarna described the visit as significant, noting that despite the dense forest cover, she had never previously visited the area.
Adherence to Forest Laws and Security Measures
Authorities stressed that all development activities would adhere strictly to existing forest protection laws. The Karregutta hills span Telangana and neighboring Chhattisgarh, with a larger portion lying across the state border.
Meanwhile, police confirmed that pressure mines previously planted by Maoists on the Telangana side of the hills have been neutralized, paving the way for safer movement and further infrastructure development. This security clearance is crucial for enabling ongoing and future projects in the region.
