Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections: Campaigning Wraps Up Ahead of Polling

Campaigning for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections concluded on Tuesday, marking the end of a heated political battle just two days before the single-phase polling scheduled for Thursday. Chief Minister and DMK supremo MK Stalin made a final push to secure a second consecutive term for his party, while Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagan (TVK) chief Vijay also appealed to voters in a last-minute effort.

MK Stalin's Final Video Message Highlights Achievements

In a video message released as campaigning drew to a close, MK Stalin urged voters to support the DMK, emphasizing his government's accomplishments over the past five years. He addressed criticisms head-on, stating, "When people call me more dangerous than my father, I see it as a reminder that I am a threat to those who wish to betray Tamil Nadu or obstruct its development." Stalin dismissed allegations that the DMK is anti-Hindu, accusing the BJP of spreading false narratives for political gain. He asserted that the party has consistently supported minority communities and will continue to do so.

Highlighting specific achievements, Stalin noted that temple properties worth over Rs 7,000 crore had been retrieved and thousands of temples renovated under the DMK regime. He credited the "Dravidian model" of governance for delivering substantial welfare benefits and development outcomes, positioning it as a key reason for voters to re-elect his government.

Vijay's Debut and Final Appeal to Voters

Meanwhile, TVK chief Vijay, who launched his party in February 2024, made his final appeal to voters through a lengthy social media post. He encouraged citizens to come out in festive attire and vote for TVK's whistle symbol on the electronic voting machines (EVMs). Vijay is contesting from Trichy East and Perambur, marking his political debut in this election. In contrast, Stalin is the DMK candidate from Kolathur, adding a personal dimension to the high-stakes contest.

Election Dynamics and Key Details

The upcoming election on Thursday is set to be a direct contest between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with the AIADMK as the largest constituent in the state. Over 4,000 candidates are vying for seats across the 234 assembly constituencies, making this one of the most competitive polls in recent Tamil Nadu history.

Key points to note:

  • Polling will take place in a single phase on Thursday.
  • Counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, which will determine the next government.
  • The election outcome could significantly impact state and national politics, given Tamil Nadu's influential role in Indian democracy.

As voters prepare to cast their ballots, the focus shifts from campaigning to the electoral process, with all eyes on the results that will shape Tamil Nadu's future governance and development trajectory.
