Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin Inaugurates Major Energy Infrastructure Projects
In a significant move to bolster the state's power infrastructure, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated a series of energy department projects with a total value of Rs 1,971 crore. The inauguration was conducted via video-conferencing from Chennai, marking a pivotal step in enhancing electricity supply and reliability across the region.
Comprehensive Substation Development Across Tamil Nadu
The projects include the establishment of 38 new substations designed to cater to Chennai and its suburban areas, as well as other parts of the state. Among these are a state-of-the-art 400/230 kV gas-insulated substation located in Korattur, two 230 kV substations in Chengalpet and Coimbatore districts, and 13 smaller substations set up by Tantransco. Additionally, 16 substations were constructed by the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Company Limited (TNPDCL) at a cost of Rs 1,067 crore.
Furthermore, Chief Minister Stalin inaugurated upgraded substations equipped with additional power transformers. These upgrades, implemented at 110 substations statewide, have collectively increased the total capacity by 4,649 mVA, significantly boosting the power distribution network's efficiency and capacity.
Enhancing Safety with Underground Power Systems
To ensure uninterrupted power supply and improve public safety during festivals and religious processions, Stalin also launched an underground (UG) power supply system in temple car streets. This initiative, completed at a cost of Rs 14.08 crore, covers major temples across Tamil Nadu, including:
- Kamatchi Amman temple
- Ekambareswarar temple
- Varadharaja Perumal temple
- Koniamman temple in Coimbatore
- Nellaiappar temple in Tirunelveli
- Arthanareeswarar temple in Tiruchengode
- Subramanya Swamy temple in Thiruparankundram
- Annamalaiyar temple in Tiruvannamalai
This underground system aims to reduce hazards and ensure reliable electricity during crowded events, reflecting the government's commitment to community welfare.
Electrification of Kathirimalai Tribal Village
In a landmark development for rural empowerment, the chief minister launched the electrification of Kathirimalai tribal village, situated in the Bargur Hills near Erode. This village is home to 76 families comprising 267 members. Fulfilling a promise made in 2024 during an event in Erode, the project involved the installation of 271 electric poles, 8.34 kilometers of aerially bunched cables, and 100 mVA transformers.
A TNPDCL official highlighted that this initiative not only provides essential electricity to the tribal community but also supports their overall development and integration into modern amenities. The electrification is expected to improve living standards, enable access to education and healthcare, and foster economic opportunities in the remote area.
These projects collectively represent a robust effort by the Tamil Nadu government to modernize the state's energy infrastructure, ensure reliable power supply, and promote inclusive growth across urban and rural landscapes.
