West Bengal Cop Arrested in Home Guard Death Case, SIT Formed
Sub-Inspector Held for Woman Home Guard's Death in Bengal

In a significant development, a police Sub-Inspector in West Bengal has been taken into custody in connection with the death of a young woman home guard. The arrest follows days of investigation and a manhunt for the accused officer.

Arrest and Court Production

The accused, identified as Sayan Bhattacharya, was apprehended on Thursday from the Swarupnagar Police Station area in Basirhat, North 24 Parganas. Bhattacharya, who was posted in Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district, had been missing since the discovery of the home guard's body. After his arrest, he was presented before the Alipore Court for legal proceedings.

Tragic Discovery and Family's Allegations

The case came to light on Sunday evening when the 22-year-old home guard's body was found hanging in her room at the police quarters of Canning Police Station. Her sister made the grim discovery after being unable to contact her and subsequently visiting her official residence.

Contesting the initial appearance, the family of the deceased has firmly stated that she did not die by suicide. They have filed a formal complaint against Sub-Inspector Sayan Bhattacharya, alleging he was involved in an extra-marital relationship with her. This allegation forms the core of their demand for a thorough investigation.

Special Investigation Team Takes Over

Responding to the seriousness of the allegations, the police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. The six-member team is being led by Parapantar Sengupta, the Additional Superintendent of Police of Baruipur. The formation of the SIT underscores the sensitive nature of the case involving a police officer.

Adding a political dimension to the tragedy, reports indicate that the deceased's father was a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker. He was murdered two years ago in Bhangar during the panchayat elections. Following his death, his eldest daughter—the deceased—was provided a job as a home guard.

The case has sent shockwaves through the local police and community, raising serious questions. The ongoing SIT investigation is now crucial in uncovering the exact sequence of events and delivering justice.
