SKM Accuses Central Government of Targeting Punjab's Institutional Representation
A significant meeting of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) was convened at Isru Bhawan on Saturday, where farmer leaders leveled serious allegations against the Union government. The primary accusation centered on what the SKM described as a deliberate attempt by the Centre to strip Punjab of its representation in various key institutions, with a specific focus on the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).
Delegation to Meet Governor on April 24
During the gathering, which saw participation from more than 20 farmer organizations, it was unanimously decided that a formal delegation would seek an audience with Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria. This meeting is scheduled for April 24, where the SKM plans to present its concerns and demand intervention to safeguard Punjab's interests in these critical bodies.
Senior SKM leader Ruldu Mansa, addressing the media after the meeting, elaborated on the allegations. He stated that the Central government's actions appear designed to remove Punjab's voice from decision-making processes, thereby enabling unilateral control over policies affecting the state. "This is a clear move to marginalize Punjab and take decisions without our input, particularly concerning vital resources," Mansa asserted.
Concerns Over Water Resource Control
Farmer leaders at the meeting expressed deep-seated fears that the underlying motive behind the Centre's alleged efforts is to gain dominance over Punjab's water resources. They argued that by diminishing Punjab's representation in institutions like the BBMB, the government could manipulate water allocation and management to the detriment of the state's agricultural and economic needs.
"We will not stand idly by and allow this attempt to succeed," declared the SKM members, vowing to resist any moves that compromise Punjab's rights over its natural resources. The organization emphasized that water is a lifeline for Punjab's farming community, and any threat to its equitable distribution would be met with steadfast opposition.
Parallel Protest by Powercom Pensioners
In a related development, the same day witnessed a separate protest by pensioners of Punjab Powercom at Aarti Chowk. The demonstration caused significant traffic disruptions in the area as retirees voiced their grievances over unmet demands.
According to Inspector Sukhjinder Singh, the SHO of Division Number Five police station, the protestors dispersed peacefully after submitting a memorandum of their demands to the additional deputy commissioner. This incident highlights the broader climate of dissent and activism in the region, with various groups mobilizing to address perceived injustices.
