Shivamogga District Administration Launches Temporary Passenger Exchange System at Hulikal Ghat
In response to severe landslides that have completely halted traffic, the Shivamogga district administration has implemented a temporary passenger exchange system at Hulikal Ghat. This innovative measure aims to restore essential connectivity for residents and travelers affected by the natural disaster.
New System Details and Operational Protocols
Additional Deputy Commissioner V Abhishek announced that the system, which became operational on April 14, allows buses from Udupi district to drop passengers at Hulikal Ghat. From this point, passengers can continue their journey within Shivamogga district while adhering to strict safety protocols.
Key operational restrictions include:
- Only 35-seater public transport buses are permitted to use the facility
- Passengers must walk approximately 85 narrow steps to cross the ghat section
- The facility is restricted to physically fit passengers due to the challenging climb involved
Route Modifications and Infrastructure Improvements
The administration has specified that buses on the Shivamogga–Hosanagara–Nagara–Mastikatte–Kundapura route are now allowed to operate only up to the Chandika Temple. To facilitate this temporary arrangement, significant infrastructure improvements have been made with community assistance.
Local residents have collaborated with authorities to widen road shoulders to 18 feet near the first curve, enabling buses to turn safely in the challenging terrain.
Safety Measures and Emergency Preparedness
Ahead of the approaching monsoon season, the administration has ordered comprehensive safety enhancements:
- Installation of handrails along the 85-step pathway
- Stationing of medical teams at strategic locations for emergency response
- Continued prohibition of public entry into the landslide-affected zone
Background and Official Response
The temporary measures follow a tragic incident last week where three people lost their lives due to mudslides at the ghat. Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi visited the affected site earlier to assess the damage and coordinate response efforts.
Officials have confirmed that comprehensive repair work will continue throughout the year, with the temporary passenger exchange system serving as an interim solution to maintain essential mobility while permanent restoration efforts progress.
