Shiv Sena (UBT) Workers Stage Protest Over LPG Crisis in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
In a significant demonstration of public discontent, Shiv Sena (UBT) workers took to the streets of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Friday, voicing strong allegations of acute domestic and commercial LPG shortages coupled with rampant black marketing in the city. The protest, which drew attention to the escalating fuel crisis, prompted immediate police action, leading to the registration of an offence to address the illegal activities.
Leadership and Demands of the Protest
Led by prominent party leader and former MLC opposition leader Ambadas Danve, the protesters embarked on a targeted campaign, submitting memorandums to 23 gas agencies across the city. These memorandums sharply questioned the agencies over practices of overcharging and irregular supply, highlighting the severe impact on residents and businesses alike.
The protesters outlined a clear set of demands to alleviate the crisis:
- Uninterrupted availability of cylinders to ensure no household or commercial entity faces scarcity.
- Sale strictly at government-fixed rates to prevent exploitation through inflated pricing.
- Immediate curb on black marketing to stop illegal profiteering from the shortage.
- Timely home delivery of LPG cylinders to enhance convenience and reliability for consumers.
- Quick redressal of consumer complaints to address grievances promptly and effectively.
Incident Leading to Police Case
During the protest, the situation escalated when workers intercepted a Bharat Gas vehicle in the Mayur Park area. The vehicle was allegedly involved in the illegal sale of LPG in a residential zone, a practice that exacerbates the shortage and fuels black market activities. Acting swiftly on the complaint filed by the protesters, police inspector Swati Khade-Kedar registered a formal case for unauthorised sale and overpricing. Reports indicate that the vehicle was caught by Shiv Sena functionary Balasaheb Thorat, underscoring the party's active role in exposing the malpractice.
Escalation and Government Warning
Following the protest and the police case, a delegation from Shiv Sena (UBT) met with district collector Dileep Swami to discuss the ongoing crisis. The delegation issued a stern warning, indicating that if the LPG shortage and associated issues persist, the protests would intensify. This move signals a potential escalation in public agitation unless concrete steps are taken to resolve the supply chain disruptions and curb illegal activities.
The protest in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar highlights a growing concern over essential commodity shortages in urban areas, with Shiv Sena (UBT) positioning itself as a vocal advocate for consumer rights. As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the authorities to implement measures that ensure fair access to LPG and combat black marketing effectively.
