Shinde Camp Alleges Mass Rebellion in Uddhav Thackeray Faction
The Eknath Shinde-led faction of the Shiv Sena has claimed that at least 14 MLAs from the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) faction are ready to switch sides. This development, dubbed Operation Tiger 2.0 by the Shinde camp, mirrors the 2022 rebellion that brought down the Maha Vikas Aghadi government.
Shinde camp leader and state minister Deepak Kesarkar stated, “We have concrete information that 14 MLAs from the UBT faction are unhappy with the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray. They are in touch with us and are ready to join the Shinde-led Shiv Sena.” He added that the rebellion could happen within the next few weeks.
Operation Tiger 2.0: A Repeat of 2022?
The term Operation Tiger 2.0 refers to the coordinated effort to engineer defections, similar to the 2022 rebellion that saw Shinde and 39 MLAs break away from Thackeray, leading to the collapse of the Uddhav Thackeray-led government. The Shinde camp now claims that a fresh wave of defections is imminent, which could further weaken the UBT faction.
UBT faction leaders have dismissed the claims as “baseless speculation” and accused the Shinde camp of spreading misinformation. UBT spokesperson Anand Dubey said, “These are false claims made to create confusion. Our MLAs are united and stand firmly with Uddhav Thackeray.”
Political Implications and Reactions
If the claims are true, the defections could significantly alter the balance of power in Maharashtra. The Shinde camp currently holds a majority in the legislative party, but a fresh influx of MLAs would consolidate its position. The UBT faction, already weakened by the 2022 split, would face an existential crisis.
Political analysts suggest that the timing of these claims is crucial, with the upcoming local body elections and the 2024 general elections in mind. The Shinde camp aims to expand its base, while the UBT faction struggles to retain its core support.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi, which includes the UBT faction, NCP, and Congress, has called for a meeting to discuss the situation. NCP leader Jayant Patil said, “We are monitoring the situation. Any attempt to destabilize the government will be met with resistance.”
UBT Faction Denies Any Unrest
Despite the Shinde camp's claims, UBT leaders have maintained that their MLAs are loyal. “There is no discontent among our MLAs. The Shinde camp is trying to create a narrative to cover up their own internal problems,” said UBT leader Sanjay Raut. He further challenged the Shinde camp to provide evidence of the alleged defectors.
The Shinde camp has not named the 14 MLAs but hinted that they are from various regions, including Marathwada and Western Maharashtra. This has led to speculation about which MLAs might be considering a switch.
Impact on Maharashtra Politics
The potential defections come at a time when the Shinde-led government is facing challenges from the opposition over issues like farmer distress and unemployment. If the rebellion materializes, it could provide a boost to the Shinde camp's morale and weaken the opposition's ability to challenge the government.
However, the UBT faction is also preparing counter-strategies, including legal action against any MLA who defects under the anti-defection law. The Supreme Court has already ruled on the validity of the 2022 defections, and a similar case could arise if fresh defections occur.
The next few weeks will be crucial for Maharashtra politics, as both camps gear up for a high-stakes battle. The Shinde camp's claims, whether true or not, have already set the stage for a new round of political maneuvering.
