Sharmila Accuses Jagan of Covert BJP Understanding, Criticizes Delimitation Stance
In a sharp political attack, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief YS Sharmila has accused YSRCP leader and former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy of maintaining a covert political understanding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Sharmila alleged that the YSRCP's stance on key national issues, particularly the delimitation exercise, has exposed its alignment with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Allegations of Political Duplicity
Sharmila claimed that Jagan, while projecting himself as part of the opposition, has effectively supported the ruling dispensation at the Centre. In a post shared on her X account, she questioned the rationale behind backing what she termed "unconstitutional" delimitation proposals, stating that true opposition parties across the country had united to resist such measures.
"Instead of standing with the opposition, Jagan has sided with the ruling party. This is politically and morally questionable," she said, emphasizing her criticism of the YSRCP's position.
Compromising Democratic Principles
Sharmila further alleged that Jagan was compromising on core democratic principles to secure protection from legal challenges linked to alleged corruption during his tenure. She accused him of "blindly endorsing" BJP policies and prioritising political survival over constitutional values.
Taking a swipe at regional parties, she grouped the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Jana Sena, and YSRCP, alleging that all three were indirectly aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and seeking his favour. This broadside highlights the complex political dynamics in Andhra Pradesh.
Clarification on Women's Reservation
On the issue of women's reservation, Sharmila clarified that the Congress party fully supports 33% reservation for women and noted that the legislation was already passed in 2023. However, she criticised the linking of the Women's Bill with delimitation, calling it "illogical and detrimental."
Her remarks underscore the ongoing debate over electoral reforms and gender representation in Indian politics.
Implications for Andhra Pradesh Politics
This development adds a new layer to the political landscape in Andhra Pradesh, with Sharmila positioning the Congress as a principled opposition force. The allegations could impact voter perceptions ahead of future elections, as parties navigate alliances and ideological stances.
Key points from Sharmila's statements include:
- Accusations of a covert BJP-YSRCP understanding.
- Criticism of delimitation proposals as unconstitutional.
- Allegations that Jagan is compromising democratic values for legal protection.
- Grouping of TDP, Jana Sena, and YSRCP as aligned with PM Modi.
- Support for women's reservation but opposition to its linkage with delimitation.
The controversy highlights the tensions between national and regional politics, with Sharmila urging transparency and adherence to constitutional norms.
