In a move shrouded in secrecy, Leader of the Opposition in Kerala, V D Satheesan, paid a late-night visit to the headquarters of the influential Syro-Malabar Church in Kochi. The visit, which occurred on Wednesday night, has gained political significance as it coincided with a major gathering of the Church's bishops.
A Discreet Arrival Amid Major Church Gathering
Visuals of the Congress leader's clandestine arrival at Mount St Thomas surfaced only on Thursday. The timing was notable as 53 bishops from across India and abroad were assembled there for the first session of the Church's 34th Synod. Choosing to avoid official vehicles, Satheesan conducted his visit with deliberate discretion, keeping it away from the public eye.
An "Informal" Meeting with Private Agendas
Church sources were quick to label the encounter as informal and private. They clarified that the opposition leader's arrival was not officially connected to the synodal proceedings, which had concluded for the day by the time of his visit. Instead, the purpose was stated to be private meetings with a few select bishops.
While sources denied a meeting with the Major Archbishop, Mar Raphael Thattil, they confirmed that Satheesan held discussions with at least three bishops. Neither the Church authorities nor Satheesan issued any formal statement regarding the content or nature of these talks.
Political Undertones Ahead of Assembly Polls
The covert visit carries considerable political weight. It comes at a crucial juncture when the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) aims to carry forward the momentum from its recent victories in the local body elections to the impending assembly polls. Engaging with leaders of a major community institution like the Syro-Malabar Church is often seen as a critical part of political outreach in Kerala.
When questioned later, Satheesan defended his actions, stating there was nothing wrong with visiting Church authorities. He drew a parallel to similar visits made by him and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in the past, framing it as a routine engagement.
The lack of official commentary from both sides has left room for speculation, ensuring that this discreet night meeting remains a topic of keen political discussion in the state.
