Satheesan Labels PK Sasi's Victory a Prestige Issue for Congress in Palakkad
Opposition leader VD Satheesan emphasized on Wednesday that the victory of CPM rebel and Ottapalam UDF-backed independent candidate PK Sasi is a significant prestige issue for the Congress party. Speaking at the UDF election convention in Ottapalam, Satheesan outlined the strategic importance of Sasi's candidacy in the broader political landscape.
Satheesan's Vision for UDF's Electoral Success
Satheesan confidently projected that when the UDF emerges victorious by winning more than 100 seats, PK Sasi will be at the forefront to lead from Ottapalam. He addressed the audience, stating, "Sasi's symbol is coconut grove, but you should consider him to be standing for the hand symbol." This remark underscores the alignment of Sasi's campaign with UDF's broader goals, despite his independent status.
Criticism of LDF Governance and Campaign Tactics
In his speech, Satheesan criticized the LDF government, accusing it of denying the achievements of the previous Oommen Chandy-led administration. He highlighted that the Chandy government provided five lakh houses between 2011 and 2016, challenging the LDF to release official figures for that period. Satheesan also commented on campaign finances, noting, "We are in the middle of a big war and will win it. We don't have much money to put up any boards. People say that if they see Pinarayi Vijayan's flex boards, they will instead vote for UDF." He further labeled the Communist party as an extreme right-wing entity, adding a sharp political critique.
PK Sasi's Response and Admiration for Satheesan
Later, PK Sasi responded to Satheesan's remarks by calling him a 'prince of stance' for his strong positions on issues. Sasi expressed deep admiration, saying, "My first request was that Satheesan should come to inaugurate the convention. Even when I was in the ruling party, I had such admiration and love for this man that I would carefully watch his every word when he raised issues in the assembly." This exchange highlights the mutual respect and strategic alliance between Sasi and the UDF leadership.
Broader Political Context and Implications
The statements from Satheesan and Sasi come amid intense political campaigning in Palakkad, with the Ottapalam constituency serving as a key battleground. Satheesan's framing of Sasi's victory as a prestige issue for Congress underscores the high stakes involved, as the UDF aims to consolidate support against the LDF. The emphasis on governance records and campaign dynamics reflects the ongoing electoral strategies shaping the region's political future.
