Sanjay Raut Launches Scathing Attack on BJP Over Mumbai Mayoral Contest
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has launched a fierce criticism against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the upcoming mayoral election in Mumbai, declaring that a BJP mayor in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) would signify a 'black day' for the city. The BMC is scheduled to elect its mayor and deputy mayor on February 11, 2026, with the BJP, holding the highest number of corporators, poised to claim the mayor's position as part of the ruling Mahayuti alliance.
Raut's Allegations Against BJP's Stance on Mumbai
In a statement to reporters, Raut expressed deep concerns, stating, 'If a BJP mayor sits in Mumbai, it will be a black day for the city, for the 106 martyrs of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, and for every Marathi person.' He accused the BJP of consistently working to weaken Mumbai's existence and its Marathi character, suggesting that their policies have always cast doubts on the city's identity. Raut further warned that Mumbai might be handed over to industrialists in the future, emphasizing that this issue transcends a mere political post and touches on the very identity of Maharashtra's capital.
Criticism of BJP-Shiv Sena Alliance and BJP's Response
Raut also targeted the alliance between the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, blaming them for the suffering of Mumbai and the Marathi community. He asserted, 'Because of those who joined hands with the BJP, Mumbai and the Marathi manoos have suffered.' In response, BJP corporator Navnath Ban dismissed Raut's remarks, countering that the day a Mahayuti mayor assumes office will be a golden day for Mumbai. Ban pledged to end what he described as 25 years of misrule and focus on development initiatives for the city.
The political tension highlights the high stakes involved in the Mumbai mayoral race, with both sides presenting contrasting visions for the city's future. As the election date approaches, these exchanges are expected to intensify, shaping public discourse around governance and regional identity in Maharashtra.
