Ranchi's Rose Gesture: 200 Flowers Replace Fines in Road Safety Drive
Ranchi: Roses, Not Fines, for Traffic Violators in Safety Month

In a unique approach to promote traffic discipline, authorities in Ranchi are observing the National Road Safety Month with a blend of soft persuasion and awareness drives. The month-long campaign, which began on January 1 and will run until January 31, is seeing active participation from the district transport office.

A Rose for Rule-Breakers: A Softer Approach to Safety

Instead of immediately issuing fines, the Ranchi district transport team led by officer Akhilesh Kumar adopted a novel method on the streets. They organized a 'rose at road' programme at key junctions like Bodeya road and Kutchery More. Here, individuals found violating traffic rules were presented with roses.

Kumar explained the rationale behind this gesture, stating it was aimed at making people consciously realize their mistakes. At least 30 people received roses directly from Kumar, with a total of 200 flowers distributed during the initiative. Notably, no monetary fines were imposed on that day as the focus was purely on education and behavioral change.

Expanding the Awareness Net: Raths and Rural Outreach

The road safety activities are set to intensify. Ranchi DC Manjunath Bhajantri will flag off the 'Jagrukta Rath' (awareness vehicle) on Saturday, adding a mobile dimension to the campaign. This vehicle will travel across areas, spreading crucial messages about adhering to traffic norms.

This year's campaign is notably more inclusive. Kumar highlighted that women's self-help groups and elected local representatives would be actively involved, especially to amplify the message in rural parts of the district. This grassroots involvement is expected to deepen the impact of the safety messages.

A Nationally Mandated Mission for Safer Roads

These activities are part of the broader National Road Safety Month, organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Across the state, the observance includes a mix of functions such as rallies, street plays, and vehicle checking drives, all designed to inspire voluntary compliance with traffic rules.

The overarching goal is to reduce accidents and foster a culture of responsibility among all road users. By combining unique gestures like rose distribution with traditional awareness methods and community participation, Ranchi's authorities hope to leave a lasting impression on the public's mind about the importance of road safety.
