Rajkot Municipal Corporation Misses Property Tax Collection Target for 2025-26
The Tax Recovery Branch of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has reported falling short of its property tax collection target for the financial year 2025-26. Official figures reveal that the branch collected Rs 447.93 crore, which is Rs 7.87 crore below the set target of Rs 455.8 crore.
Significant Default Rate Despite Growth in Collections
A concerning 25% of property owners in Rajkot failed to pay their taxes, even after receiving multiple reminders and warnings about strict enforcement actions from the municipal corporation. This high default rate highlights ongoing compliance challenges in the city's tax administration.
Despite missing the target, the collection figures represent an 8.44% growth compared to the previous financial year. This translates to an increase of Rs 34.44 crore from FY 2024-25, indicating some positive momentum in revenue collection efforts.
Zone-Wise Collection Breakdown and Compliance Statistics
Official compliance statistics show that 75.75% of property owners fulfilled their tax obligations this year. Out of 6,10,931 registered properties in Rajkot, taxes were successfully collected from 4,63,564 properties. This marks a slight improvement from last year, with 43,905 more property owners paying their taxes compared to FY 2024-25.
The zone-wise collection breakdown reveals:
- West Zone: Highest contributor with Rs 189.65 crore collected from 2,08,850 taxpayers
- Central Zone: Second highest with Rs 161.80 crore collected from 1,48,406 taxpayers
- East Zone: Recorded Rs 95.79 crore collected from 1,05,552 property owners
Property Type Analysis and Government Property Recovery
When examining collections by property type, commercial properties contributed significantly more than residential ones. A total of 1,15,534 non-residential taxpayers paid Rs 242.34 crore, while 3,47,274 residential taxpayers contributed Rs 204.90 crore.
The RMC also successfully recovered Rs 24.21 crore from government properties, adding to the overall collection figures for the financial year.
Digital Payment Adoption and Enforcement Actions
The municipal corporation reported a strong shift toward digital payment methods during the collection period. Approximately 65.40% of paying taxpayers, totaling 3,02,674 individuals, opted for online transactions. These digital payments amounted to Rs 240 crore of the total collection.
Meanwhile, traditional payment methods accounted for the remainder:
- Cash payments: Rs 125.94 crore
- Cheque payments: Rs 81.3 crore
The RMC maintained a strict enforcement stance against persistent defaulters throughout the recovery operations. During these efforts, the civic body issued confiscation notices to 12,191 properties and took the more severe step of sealing 1,566 properties that continued to default on their tax payments.
This combination of digital adoption and strict enforcement represents the municipal corporation's dual approach to improving tax compliance while modernizing collection processes. The missed target, despite overall growth, suggests that further strategies may be needed to address the significant portion of property owners who continue to default on their tax obligations.
