Rajkot's Massive Demolition Operation Continues for Second Consecutive Day
The extensive demolition campaign in Rajkot's Jangleshwar area persisted through Tuesday, marking the second day of this large-scale civic operation. Authorities focused on dismantling substantial and permanent structures that had been identified as illegal encroachments.
Scale of Demolition and Debris Clearance
Municipal officials reported that a total of 1,509 houses were demolished during the two-day operation on Monday and Tuesday. By Tuesday evening, approximately 2,500 tonnes of debris had been cleared from the demolition site, demonstrating the massive scope of this urban clearance initiative.
Peaceful Execution and Security Measures
Deputy Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Jani confirmed to reporters that all property owners had voluntarily vacated their premises before the demolition began, which helped prevent any clashes or unfortunate incidents. The entire operation has proceeded peacefully under comprehensive police security arrangements.
The security deployment has been substantial, with around 2,500 police personnel involved in maintaining order. This force includes local police units, specialized surveillance teams, drone surveillance units, Special Operations Group personnel, Quick Response Teams (QRT), and State Reserve Police Force contingents.
Targeting Criminal Elements and Clearing Encroachments
According to DCP (Crime) Jagdish Bangarwa, the demolition specifically targeted properties connected to 11 history-sheeters residing in the Jangleshwar area. These included:
- Eight residential houses described as "luxurious properties"
- Ninety-seven rooms constructed along the riverbed
- Three commercial shops
- A substantial 3,000 square-foot hall
Police investigations revealed that the accused individuals lived in well-constructed houses while simultaneously building small rooms along the riverbed that they rented out. The rental income from these properties was allegedly used to finance illegal activities, according to official statements.
Technical Challenges and Equipment Used
The demolition of multi-storey buildings and palatial bungalows presented technical challenges, as these substantial structures cannot be easily torn down with standard excavators. Officials explained that besides the 65 regular excavators deployed for the operation, extra-large hydraulic excavators were specifically utilized to raze the larger bungalows and more substantial constructions.
Urban Development Outcomes and Future Plans
As a direct result of this demolition campaign, encroachments along the TP Road have been completely cleared. Civic authorities have announced that preparations for constructing a new road will commence on Monday, with a foundation-laying ceremony scheduled to mark the beginning of this infrastructure development project.
The comprehensive nature of this operation reflects a determined approach to urban planning and law enforcement in Rajkot, addressing both illegal encroachments and properties linked to criminal activities simultaneously.
