Raipur Mall Bounces Back After Vandalism, Patrons Condemn Bajrang Dal Attack
Raipur Mall Reopens After Christmas Decor Vandalism

A week after a violent mob destroyed its Christmas installations, Magneto Mall in Raipur has defiantly reopened with fresh decorations, drawing crowds who condemned the attack and celebrated resilience. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday last week, saw around 80-90 people, allegedly led by Bajrang Dal workers, vandalise the festive displays with wooden sticks.

From Vandalism to Vibrancy: A Mall's Defiant Reopening

On New Year's Eve, the atmosphere at the mall was one of joy and normalcy, belying the destruction of the previous week. Visitors from diverse faiths and backgrounds flocked to see the new "Winter Wonderland" theme. The centrepiece was a stunning 35-foot "Grand Bell" adorned with lights, red and green fabric, golden bells, stars, trumpets, and toy horses. From a distance, it resembled a Christmas tree, much like the one that was destroyed.

Patrons like Manoj, a Hindu resident of Raipur, expressed strong disapproval of the violence. "I am a Hindu but I condemn that incident. Protesting is fine but no one should get violent. They (the vandals) must be punished," he told The Indian Express. He praised his son's perspective, highlighting a generational shift: "My son told me... I am very proud of my son because he says everyone has the right to be happy."

Community Solidarity and Social Media Support

The mall's recovery was amplified on social media. An Instagram reel shared by the management, contrasting scenes of vandalism with the restored celebrations, went viral, garnering over 1,83,000 likes. The comments section flooded with support for the mall and calls for strict action against the attackers.

Visitors like Ma Shiao Lin, who came with her family after seeing the reel, appreciated the effort. "I heard that the mall’s decorations were damaged but it is good that they have set it up again. The decorations over here look better than other malls," she said. Others, like Rani from Bhilai and student Suman Patel, echoed the sentiment, calling the vandalism wrong and praising the mall's beautiful new setup.

Legal Outcome: Accused Granted Bail

In a related legal development, a Sessions Court in Raipur granted bail on Wednesday to the six Bajrang Dal workers arrested in connection with the case. They were expected to be released from jail on Thursday, January 1, 2026. While the legal process continues, the mall authorities chose to focus on moving forward, letting their viral reel convey their message: "We were vandalised. But we are up and ready. Again to cheer up the city."

The swift restoration and the public's overwhelming response underscore a community's rejection of sectarian violence and its embrace of shared festive spaces. The mall's quiet resilience speaks louder than the vandalism that briefly threatened its spirit.
