Punjab Minister Goyal Launches Rs 3.72 Cr Housing Aid & Flood Gate Project in Sangrur
Punjab Minister Goyal's Rs 3.72 Cr Aid & Flood Gate in Sangrur

In a significant push for rural welfare and flood mitigation, Punjab's Minister for Water Resources and Mining, Barinder Kumar Goyal, spearheaded key initiatives in the Sangrur district on Friday. The minister focused on providing housing support to economically weak families and launching a crucial infrastructure project to protect farmlands from waterlogging.

Housing Grants Enhanced to Combat Inflation

During a public event held in Moonak, Minister Goyal distributed cheques to 149 beneficiaries under a state housing grant scheme. The total disbursement amounted to Rs 3.72 crore. In a move acknowledging rising costs, the assistance per family has been increased to Rs 2.5 lakh, up from the previous amount of Rs 1.5 lakh. This enhanced sum is aimed at enabling the construction of permanent and sturdy homes for underprivileged families.

Addressing the gathering, Goyal emphasized that providing shelter is the foremost duty of any government. He stated that the Punjab government is fulfilling this responsibility with full commitment. The minister described the funds as the people's own money, collected through taxes and now being delivered back to them directly and without any discrimination.

Foundation for Flood Protection Laid in Karail Village

In a parallel development aimed at agricultural protection, the minister laid the foundation stone for an inlet gate on the Ghaggar river at Burji 3900 RD in Karail village. This Rs 32.8 lakh project is slated for completion within one and a half months.

The primary objective of this infrastructure is to allow the direct and immediate discharge of rainwater into the river. This is expected to prevent the chronic waterlogging that has historically damaged over 1,000 acres of farmland in the area, causing severe financial losses to the farming community. Once operational, the new gate will eliminate the dependency on motor pumps, thereby reducing electricity and diesel expenses for farmers and ensuring the timely sowing of subsequent crops.

Minister Criticizes Centre, Reaffirms State's Stance

Minister Goyal highlighted that the region faces annual flood threats from the Ghaggar river. He credited proactive measures taken by the state government for averting major damage during the last monsoon season, even when water levels reached a precarious 753 feet.

In his speech, Goyal also criticized the central government for withdrawing from its responsibility to resolve the inter-state Ghaggar river issue between Punjab and Haryana. He asserted that the Punjab government would vigorously defend the state's water rights at every possible forum.

Concluding his address, the minister reiterated his government's focus on public service over politics. He listed the delivery of election promises such as free electricity, mohalla clinics, and generating employment opportunities as evidence of this commitment.
