Congress Candidate Slams Punjab Government Over Caste-Based Financial Assistance Disparity
Advocate Ranjit Kumar, who previously contested as a Congress candidate from the Chabbewal SC reserved assembly segment during the last by-election, has issued a strong condemnation of the Punjab government's welfare policies. He has raised serious concerns about what he describes as discriminatory financial assistance practices that favor women from Scheduled Caste (SC) categories over those from the general category.
Unequal Distribution of Welfare Funds
Kumar has pointed out that the current Punjab government scheme provides comparatively lower financial assistance to women belonging to the general category when measured against the support extended to women from SC backgrounds. This disparity, according to the former political candidate, creates an unjust system where welfare is distributed based on caste lines rather than genuine economic need.
"It is unfair and completely unacceptable that the Punjab government is implementing policies that result in lower financial assistance for women from the general category compared to those from the SC category," Kumar stated emphatically. "Government welfare programs must prioritize economic hardship over artificial caste divisions that only serve to fragment society further."
Call for Economic-Based Assistance Model
The advocate-turned-politician has articulated a clear vision for what he believes should be the foundation of all government assistance programs. He argues that every woman facing financial difficulties in Punjab deserves equal support from the state, regardless of her social or caste classification.
"The fundamental principle should be economic vulnerability, not social category," Kumar emphasized. "When a woman is struggling to make ends meet, whether she belongs to the general category or SC category becomes irrelevant. Her economic reality should determine the assistance she receives."
Proposal for Universal Financial Support
In response to what he perceives as an inequitable system, Kumar has put forward a concrete proposal for reforming Punjab's welfare approach toward women. He is urging the state government to implement a uniform financial assistance scheme that would provide Rs 1,500 to every woman in Punjab who meets economic hardship criteria.
"Therefore, I would strongly urge the government to revise its policies and provide Rs 1,500 to each and every woman of Punjab who demonstrates genuine financial need," Kumar declared. "This would ensure fairness and eliminate the current caste-based discrimination that has crept into our welfare systems."
Political Implications and Social Justice Concerns
The criticism from the former Congress candidate highlights ongoing debates about social justice, equality, and welfare distribution in Punjab's political landscape.
