Pune Residents Stage Protest Over Encroachments and RMC Plant Issues
In a significant display of public discontent, residents of Bavdhan in Pune organized a protest in front of the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) Kothrud-Bavdhan ward office on Tuesday. The demonstration highlighted the civic administration's failure to implement permanent measures against widespread encroachments on footpaths and roads, as well as violations by ready mix concrete (RMC) plants in the vicinity that are allegedly flouting environmental regulations.
Residents Voice Frustration Over Persistent Problems
BS Vyawahare, a resident of Bavdhan Budruk who participated in the rally, expressed the community's exhaustion with repeatedly lodging complaints. "During the day, unauthorized vendors selling vegetables and fruits take over the roads, while at night, illegal stalls hawking snacks, food items, and beverages clutter the area," he stated. Vyawahare emphasized that constructed footpaths are no longer accessible to pedestrians, and in many parts of Bavdhan Budruk, proper pavements are entirely absent.
He further detailed concerns about the RMC plants, noting, "These plants contribute to both air and noise pollution by not adhering to emission control norms and operating noisily throughout the night. Additionally, trucks transporting materials to and from these facilities cause traffic congestion and damage the local roads."
Symbolic Protest and Political Support
The protesters made a symbolic gesture by placing a vegetable vendor's cart at the entrance of the ward office. They were joined by area corporator Kiran Dagade Patil, who criticized the PMC's inaction. "Multiple complaints have been filed by citizens, but the administrative officials have consistently failed to respond effectively," Patil asserted. He warned of escalating actions, saying, "If a solution is not provided by the end of the week, we plan to lock the ward office. What is the purpose of such an office if it cannot manage ward affairs?"
Administrative Response and Proposed Actions
Suhas Mahadev Jadhav, assistant municipal commissioner of the Kothrud-Bavdhan ward office, addressed the concerns by outlining ongoing efforts. "We regularly take action against encroaching food trucks and other vehicles, primarily through fines," he explained. However, Jadhav acknowledged limitations, noting that collaboration with the traffic police and Regional Transport Office (RTO) is essential for stricter enforcement against rule violators. He committed to having officials inspect the problematic spots at night over the next two days.
Regarding the RMC plants, Jadhav clarified that multiple authorities are involved in monitoring compliance. "We have requested the PMC engineering department to conduct site visits to verify adherence to construction norms and sanctioned building plans," he said. He added that violations of environmental laws fall under the jurisdiction of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). A meeting is scheduled for the end of the week to review progress on these issues.
The protest underscores growing citizen activism in Pune, with residents demanding accountability and swift action from municipal authorities to address urban encroachments and environmental hazards.
