Sachin Pilot Accuses Rajasthan BJP of Delaying Local Polls Due to Fear of Defeat

Senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot launched a sharp critique against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Rajasthan on Monday, accusing it of systematically weakening grassroots democracy by repeatedly postponing local body and panchayat elections. Pilot alleged that this delay is driven by a palpable "fear of defeat" that has gripped the ruling party.

Systematic Avoidance of Democratic Accountability

Addressing reporters in Tonk, Pilot framed the situation in Rajasthan as part of a broader, concerning trend of delays in local elections across several states. He described it as a "systematic attempt" to evade democratic accountability at the grassroots level. "Across cities and villages, administrators are in place but they are unable to effectively handle people's day-to-day issues. There is a widespread demand that elections be held at the earliest," he emphasized, highlighting the administrative vacuum and public frustration.

The former deputy chief minister pointed out that since the BJP assumed power in the state, crucial democratic exercises have been stalled. "Elections to student unions, municipal bodies, and panchayat institutions have not been conducted," he stated, underscoring a pattern of inaction.

Political Motives Behind the Delay

Pilot questioned the government's commitment to democratic processes, noting that even court directions and the April 15 deadline have been ignored. "It is unclear what the Election Commission and the government are doing," he remarked, expressing bewilderment at the continued postponement.

He did not mince words when attributing political motives to the delay. "It is widely believed that the BJP government does not want to hold elections because the results will not be in their favour. Out of this fear, they are repeatedly postponing polls on one pretext or another," Pilot alleged, suggesting that the ruling party is apprehensive about facing the electorate.

Broader Governance Criticisms: MGNREGA and Employment

Expanding his critique beyond electoral delays, Pilot targeted the Centre regarding the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He claimed the scheme has been "effectively shut down" in Rajasthan and weakened nationwide. "In the villages I visited, MGNREGA work has almost come to a halt. We had warned earlier that renaming schemes was a cover to dilute them. When Congress was in power, lakhs of people benefited, but today the scheme is nearly defunct," he lamented, contrasting past successes with current failures.

Further allegations included inadequate funding for rural development and a misplaced focus on publicity over governance. "The government is not allocating adequate funds for rural development and is focusing more on 'management through advertisements' than actual governance," Pilot charged, criticizing the administration's priorities.

He also questioned the state government's employment claims, referencing unmet promises. "In the first budget, there was a promise of four lakh jobs. Now two-and-a-half years have passed—how many people have actually been employed?" he asked, casting doubt on the BJP's delivery on key economic pledges.

Congress's Stance and Future Actions

Asserting the Congress party's resolve, Pilot declared that they would continue to mount pressure on the government to conduct elections and address pressing governance issues. He concluded that the current approach is "not in the interest of the people," vowing sustained opposition to ensure democratic norms and public welfare are upheld in Rajasthan.
