Panchkula Municipal Corporation Elections: Political Activity Intensifies Ahead of May 10 Polling
Political activity in Panchkula has significantly intensified ahead of the upcoming Municipal Corporation elections, with the State Election Commission officially announcing May 10 as the polling date. With less than ten days remaining for the final date of filing nominations, aspirants for councillor and mayor positions are actively lobbying for party tickets across all major political organizations.
Political Parties Ramp Up Preparations
Leaders and workers from various political parties are now deeply engaged in strategic meetings, extensive outreach programs, and intensive internal discussions to strengthen their cases for nominations. Party offices throughout Panchkula have witnessed a remarkable surge in political activity, with contenders working diligently to consolidate ground-level support and secure crucial organizational backing.
Senior political leaders are conducting thorough consultations to finalize candidate selections, carefully considering multiple factors including winnability, caste combinations, and local influence. This meticulous approach reflects the high stakes involved in the upcoming municipal elections.
Congress Party's Strategic Moves
Panchkula Congress president Sanjay Chauhan confirmed that detailed discussions have already been conducted with applicants for both councillor and mayor positions. "We have engaged in comprehensive discussions with various candidates who applied for councillor and mayor posts," Chauhan stated. "Now, we have scheduled a crucial meeting with the Congress committee in Delhi on April 16, where I will present the list of probable candidates. Final names will be declared following thorough deliberations."
In a significant legal development, the Congress party has once again approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court against a recent notification issued by the state government regarding municipal corporation wards. Senior party leader Ravinder Rawal emphasized that the notification was incomplete and failed to mention all wards properly.
BJP's Advanced Selection Process
The Bharatiya Janata Party has indicated that their candidate selection process is already in an advanced stage. Party president Ajay Mittal commented, "Our party maintains consistent activity regardless of election cycles. We have completed screening of potential candidates and will announce names shortly, especially now that the polling date has been officially declared."
JJP's Deliberations and Consensus
Meanwhile, the Jannayak Janta Party clarified that the final decision regarding contesting the elections rests with the party high command. Following the polling date announcement, the district unit conducted an important meeting on Tuesday where all present leaders unanimously agreed the party should participate in the elections.
Notably, there emerged a strong consensus on fielding district president O P Sihag for the mayoral position. Discussions also progressed regarding candidates for various wards, though the party reiterated that ultimate decisions remain with the high command.
Election Schedule and Code of Conduct
With Haryana State Election Commissioner Devinder Singh Kalyan's official announcement, the model code of conduct has been in effect since April 13. This implementation restricts transfers of officials and employees in concerned areas until completion of the entire election process.
According to the detailed election schedule, returning officers will issue nomination notices on April 15. Candidates can file nomination papers from April 21 to April 25 between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM daily. Scrutiny of nomination papers is scheduled for April 27, followed by a withdrawal period until 3:00 PM on April 28.
After nomination withdrawals, election symbols will be officially allotted to candidates. Polling for all municipal positions will occur on May 10 from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with vote counting for municipal bodies commencing on May 13 at 8:00 AM in designated counting centers across the region.
The intensified political activity reflects the growing importance of local governance issues and sets the stage for a closely contested municipal election in Panchkula.
