Over Half of Mohali's Snatching, Theft, and Burglary Cases Remain Unsolved, Data Shows
In a stark revelation during the recent budget session of the Punjab assembly, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann presented data indicating that more than half of the snatching, theft, and burglary cases registered in Mohali between January 2025 and January 2026 have not been solved. The figures were shared in response to a query by BJP MLA Jangi Lal Mahajan, who sought details on such incidents in the area.
Detailed Breakdown of Unsolved Cases
According to the written reply from CM Mann, who also holds the home portfolio, a total of 49 snatching cases were registered during the specified period. Of these, 27 cases, accounting for 55%, remain unsolved. For other theft cases, including house theft, 42 were reported, with 30 cases, or 71%, still pending resolution. Burglary cases numbered 60, and 32 of them, representing 53%, have not been closed.
Additionally, the data highlighted vehicle theft as a significant concern. Out of 114 vehicle theft cases registered in Mohali during the same timeframe, 48 cases, or 42%, are yet to be solved. This comprehensive breakdown underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing property crimes in the region.
Government Measures to Combat Crime
In response to Mahajan's inquiry about preventive actions, the CM outlined several strategies being implemented by the Punjab police. "Raids are being conducted by preparing and deploying secret sources to trace the accused," the reply stated. To curb incidents like robbery, snatching, and theft, 24-hour police checkpoints have been established as per the directives of the Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab.
The government is also leveraging technology to enhance surveillance. "The city is being fully monitored through CCTV cameras, and PCR teams continuously patrol the city," the reply added. Furthermore, cordon and search operations (CASO) are being conducted regularly on the orders of the DGP, aiming to deter criminal activities and improve public safety.
Background and Public Concern
Jangi Lal Mahajan, the BJP MLA from Mukerian, explained that he raised the issue after being approached by acquaintances living in Mohali who had been victims of such crimes. "Some of my acquaintances living in Mohali approached me and requested me to raise this issue in the assembly. A couple of them were themselves the victims of such incidents," he said when contacted. This highlights the growing public anxiety over security in the area.
The data presentation and subsequent discussion in the assembly shed light on the ongoing efforts and challenges in law enforcement. While the police are actively deploying measures like checkpoints, CCTV monitoring, and CASO operations, the high percentage of unsolved cases indicates a need for enhanced investigative capabilities and resource allocation.
As Mohali continues to grapple with these crime statistics, the government's response will be closely watched by residents and stakeholders alike. The emphasis on preventive strategies, combined with technological integration, aims to create a safer environment, but achieving tangible results in case resolution remains a critical goal for the Punjab administration.
