Odisha Government Issues Summer Power Protection Directive
In response to escalating summer temperatures, Odisha's Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister, K V Singh Deo, has issued a crucial directive to power distribution companies (discoms). On Monday, he mandated that discoms must not disconnect electricity supply for domestic consumers due to pending bills. This order is set to remain effective until the onset of the monsoon season, providing a temporary relief measure during the peak heat period.
Strict Instructions Against Arbitrary Power Cuts
Singh Deo emphasized that the government's priority is to prevent public suffering during the harsh summer months. He explicitly warned discoms against implementing arbitrary power outages, stating, "We had also told the power distribution companies not to indulge in power cuts during the summer season." The minister stressed the necessity of uninterrupted power supply, particularly as temperatures continue to climb.
Furthermore, the directive includes a requirement for advanced public notification. If electricity supply must be interrupted for essential repair or maintenance work, discoms are instructed to inform consumers beforehand through SMS and other communication channels. This allows residents to prepare accordingly and minimizes inconvenience.
IMD Forecasts Intensifying Heatwave Conditions
The government's intervention comes alongside a concerning weather forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Manorama Mohanty, director of IMD Bhubaneswar, predicts a significant temperature increase of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius across several parts of Odisha in the upcoming week.
Districts in southern and western Odisha are expected to experience severe heatwave conditions, while coastal areas will likely face uncomfortably humid weather. This meteorological outlook underscores the urgency of ensuring reliable electricity access for cooling and daily needs.
Public Response and Government Rationale
The directive follows numerous complaints from residents across the state regarding frequent and unscheduled power outages, which have exacerbated public distress during the heat. Sujit Nayak, a resident of Rajnagar in Kendrapada district, expressed hope for relief, noting, "Unscheduled power cuts during summer season is like punishing people without having committed any offence. I hope power distribution companies will follow the deputy chief minister's order."
A senior officer from the energy department explained the government's focus, stating, "With temperatures set to climb further, the state government's focus is now on ensuring that households are not left without electricity during one of the harshest periods of the year." This move aims to safeguard public health and comfort as Odisha braces for potentially record-breaking heat.
